(Seriously, if you're 100% into your Zero or Gaige or Kreig and someone said "Axton is the best" and you switched to an Axton you'd die horribly. Stick with the character you like best, learn their skills, build a good skill tree, find the weapons that suit their/your playstyle, and *that* will always be the best class in UVHM)
Ok then, Number 1 would be Gaige, no question. She broke the game!! Mooooar anarchy! :p
Gunzerker (solo)
Commando (solo)
Siren (Best grouped great solo)
Mechromancer
Assassin
1. Sal
2. Krieg
3. Gaige
4. Zer0
5. Maya
6. Axton
The reason Sal is up top is because Money shot / inconcievable procs like a mofo and he is borderline god mode with a harold or interfacer and grog. Not to mention damage swapping and offhand traits. (combos such as pimpernel/ahab or lady fist/ harold, etc). Krieg (only going to explain hellborn, but his melee is just as viable) is 2nd because in the OP levels his dots scale while health does not, so elemental empathy alone provides some serious survivabilty. His damage output with all the buffs his fire dots get are a force to be reckoned with. He even demolishes fire resistant enemies with a good kitten or DPUH. His damage potential and survivability are just monsterous. This next one is a little tough, it was a close pick between Zer0 and Gaige for #3, but anarchist gaige with 400 or 600 stacks of anarchy and a sham / norfleet are kinda hard to argue with. She also has some great damage with weapons like the fibber and the stinger a good shock cc or interfacer will work nicely as well. Zer0 is 4th because he has some really nice skills that are game changers solo or co-op, especially with the recent Kunai fix buffing DM back to 80%. Not to mention being a ninja and clearing out an entire bandit camp in a single decepti0n with MMF chains is one of the most satisfying things you can do in the game. Maya is pretty far down the list at #5 because many of her skills just don't scale well in UVHM and her DoT skills REALLY suffer in the op levels. Cloud kill being the most obvious, but Blight Pheonix and Helios as well. They do practically nothing and the enemies health regen is too strong for those to be viable skills. I would say she is the character who suffers the most from poor balance issues which is rather unfortunate. Axton.... well what can I say? His skill set just doesn't allow him to compete with the other vault hunters in terms of damage or survivability. Don't get me wrong there are good Axton builds and Axton players out there, but he just isn't on par with the other vault hunters in UVHM.
Well that was a really long explanation, but those are my thoughts on the matter. By no means is this the order of my personal favorites though. That list order would be Krieg, Zer0, Gaige, Maya, Axton and Sal. I hate Axton and Sal btw.
This most of all. My personal best is Gaige, but she's really built as more of an early game character and loses much of her strength in UVHM.
Solo
1. Salvadore (majorly unbalanced skill synergies make him extremely mindlessly boring)
2. Kreig (hard to play but when done correctly becomes almost invincible)
3. Zero (takes skill to master but is the highest DPSing character)
4. Maya (crowd control)
5. Axton (most balanced gameplay, nothing special but no real weakness)
6. Gaige (my best but relies on much build-up to be productive)
Co-op
1. Maya (healing, slagging, crowd control)
2. Salvadore (mindlessly boring action)
3. Axton (best co-op offensive skills)
4. Zero (improve DPS)
5. Kreig (can quickly res others as long as they don't then get you killed which sucks!)
6. Gaige (help distract enemies)
My personal preference though would be Gaige, Maya, Axton, Kreig, Salvadore, and then Zero. I would have to say I find Gaige and Kreig the most enjoyable to play though. So much fun!
From my reading other posts and what not, it sounds like Krieg is the way to go.
1) Salvadore is broken and not many people play, he is the best solo/group class. can solo all bosses much esier than anyone else - can probably carry 3 other players, has the highest dps - good defense later on.
2) Maya is probably the second best solo/group - ruin is a good CC/slag ability allowing her to eat groups of mobs alive. Rez for groups.
3) Gaige is the second highest dps with anarchy and she has a pet to deflect agro, she is around here but without high stacks of anarchy she is probably the worst class...so if she dies she needs a few minutes to farm in sanctuary or at the crater bar.
3) axton because of slag damage turrets mostly, and they can draw agro. he is average.
5) zero, his single shots can be high but in UVHM 3 stacks of slag are required for most thing which takes away from his 1 mile sniping game. - things like the bee shield and multi projectile weapons - pitchfork, sand hawk, etc realy smooth out damage per second for all but salvadore who can literaly spam a norfleet all day and gaige who can get a 1050% gun damage boost, 263% if you never hit anything. He is squishy. No innate defense to speak of aside from his trap card.

6)--idk kreig - I don't see him beating the top 3. He can solo or group all the way to OP8 though...I have been researching him as I am considering a melee and he seems to be a high risk, low reward class. Other classes just seem to do more. He seems to have issues in groups where mobs have more life and may not die right away since he wants to be close.
Which mobs would you be referring to? I will gladly show you how easily he can deal with them if you specify.
Like I said idk (i don't know) Seems to be most mobs when there are a few other players, no other class required nearly as many rezes while I leveled, and there were few kreig players. I couldn't find any youtube vids of an end game zerker grouping and the solo runs seem much slower and more dangerous than than the top 4 I listed. I'm aware bloodsplosion can instant gib some bosses but most classes have methods. Maybe fuel the rampage is an issue with grouping.
I'll probably try kreig to see, he seems to have a fun playstyle.
Well that's the problem. You're looking at early game Krieg. He probably has the roughest start of all the vault hunters imo. He doesn't have any of the skills needed for survivablilty until around 25 (if you're hellborn) or 31 (if you're melee). Anyway sometime I'll put on the 4 player difficulty mod and set it to 2 or 3 players (because on 4 player difficulty the health regen just starts getting stupidly overpowered for common mobs) on OP8 to record some mobbing footage. That should be enough to show you he's not at frail as you think lol.
No I don't have a guide, but I can tell you what gear I use and link you to a couple of my builds.
For my melee build I typically use this build (solo) http://www.bl2skills.com/psycho.html#50504015050150550005055105050000000
My gear I use for that build is a Rough Rider, Slag Rapier, Blood of the Ancients or Explosive damage relic, Legendary or Scream Sickle com (with +6 in the Silence the Voices) Unkempt Harold, Rubi/Grog , Chain lightning for pulling out grog and getting quick heals if I need them or happen to be out of the rampage for whatever reason. And the 4th gun slot is just whatever I happen to want to use at the time.
The reason I use Embrace the Pain with the Rough Rider is because since my shields are always down I can spam my harold if I feel like using that. And for group play the only thing I would change really is moving one point from embrace the pain to Redeem the Soul because Maya with res and Krieg with Redeem the soul can instant revive each other which is pretty nice.
For my Hellborn build I would say it works just as well in co-op as it does in solo http://www.bl2skills.com/psycho.html#55000500055100550004000051555000051
Gear is Practicable Interfacer (fire), Rubi/Grog, Harold or corrosive badaboom depending on the enemies in my current location, and Rabid Kitten (usually have corrosive out for loaders and armored targets). Flame of the Firehawk, Bone of the Ancients for more fire damage, Legendary Torch, and chain lightning/ 0 fuse storm front for stipping my shield.
