In the face of Hyperion and Handsome Jack and the threat they bring, Roland had to stop having fun, and get serious. Even late game, Lilith is still calling you Killer and being somewhat joking, Mordecai places getting stupid drunk over getting stuff done, Brick sounds cheery with his "Hey Slab!" line, and likes general destruction. Roland actually acts serious for getting stuff done.
In a way, BL2 Roland is very much "All Work No Play" compared to his BL1 self, but he took up that mantle to try and protect what little there is to protect. If Hyperion wasn't such a constant threat, I bet Roland would be more like his BL1 self, just with a more awesome voice :P
Also for BOFH comment, I agree completely. The original in my opinion is better when it came to story telling in the darker sense. If you truly looked at Borderlans 1 and actually listened to the story, specifically Tannis, it was extremely dark and serious.
dARE, If there was one thing I would want in Borderlands 2 is the peralescent Atlas weapons from Borderlands 1. If Roland did use any Atlas weapons, that would be a nice nostalgic detail that Gearbox could've put in.
*spoilers!*
Lilith said, "Holy Badass". It sent chills down my spine.
Now look at BL2, purely by comparing numbers, the BL2 characters are all massively stronger then the BL1 crew, getting 10,000 Health before Level 50, getting like 25k Shield at level 45 or so, weaker rapid fire guns that are dealing around 2000 per bullet at Level 45... Each tree has more tiers and needs more points to fill out completely as well!
Level 50 BL1 characters would be in trouble against Level 20 BL2 characters, plain and simple >.<
I would say that in the five years for the advancement of technology and the the discovery of eridium would increase the power of weapons and equipment.
But on a development standpoint, I think it was just to create the illusion that you are more powerful.
But story and game wise, Oh yeah, the vault hunters now are far weaker. Look at the battle with *spoilers* Wilhelm. The previous vault hunters claimed they couldnt even make a scratch on him.
Actually Jack poisoned Wilhelm before the fight so the vault hunters could get the power core. There's an unused audio file somewhere in the game files. Listen to 6:50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6eQ5Ev0gTg
There's also "weakened constructors" that are scripted into the fight but most players don't ever see them show up because they kill Wilhelm too quickly. So the reason you (the player/s) were able to kill him so easily is because Jack wanted it to be that way.
But I do agree that it makes sense with the whole story. Jack being as devious as he is, from tricking the previous vault hunters to opening the vault to trigger the growth of eridium. If I were to take the missing audio logs into consideration, it would change my argument about the previous vault hunters being weaker.
