And are the side quests longer than the main quests?

Edit: 40-45hrs for the base game, not including DLC.
I havent played the first one, but it doesn't really matter. They are sparsley interconnected at best.
DLC wise, honestly, the only one I think is absolutely worth it is Tiny Tina's Assualt on Dragon Keep. The other DLC just feels too samey to the main game for me. However, you may want to pick up Torgue because he is a pretty great character.
The only reason to pick up the other two imo is for the few exclusive pieces of gear, but if you don't care about min maxing, I'd skip it.
If you need story so bad go read a book son.
