From my experience, his shots are extremely weak. Even on normal, it takes multiple concentrated shots to kill the most basic of enemies like larval varkids. He's really designed to support you by slagging than outright killsteal from you, although the sound of sniper shots going off every 2 seconds does get grating.
He does destroy everything at the end of the Animal Preserve arc, but then again, he's justifiably ANGRY.
Yes, he will snipe a lot of the pods, but it should still be possible to mutate some.
And ... having him slag the mutated Varkids is actually helpful.
You'll have to go down low and dirty with Varkits. That is, meet all of them upfront and wipe the azz. It's not about kills until mutations.
