Is Borderlands 2 a continuation story of Borderlands 1 or a completely different story by itself?
Do I need to play part 1 first before playing part 2?

They aren't exactly connected, but the playable characters from 1 make a return. It's not necessary to play Borderlands 1.

Are you actually sure of your info?

BIG *hearts* SPOILER ALEEERT
this is how it goes BL1 >TPS > BL2. BL1 shows you that Jack used angel to lure the vault hunters into opening the vault and lied to them, in TPS it will show you how jack became what he became later on and most noticeable is his face. BL2 carries on with totally different characters than BL1 but the story remains the same, to close to vault once and for all this time, yet jack was planing it according to his knowledge with the vault hunters, later in-game you will see that he spies on the vault hunters, there is even records of Angel having convo with Jack and talking about ZERO and his skills while killing people in a blink!

What seems to happen after BL1 that each member of the vault hunters went on their own kinda... brick had his slab clan, roland became CR leader, no much sure about lilith but she was called firehawk might be helping or was with roland as well hence in the mission of saving roland she says something about hyperion wanted to capture him. mordecai was the spy for CR more accurate for roland.

They work out together after CR knows about a living vault hunters and in order to join the CR they need to do something in the very begining, at that moment they work their way to stop jack, but once again, Angel lures them into trap, but finally starting to help them all to end her suffering from her FATHER "Handsome JACK".

Well, what I tried to say, in my opinion - it's not exactly clear for all that stuff that happened, unless you look up a wiki or you played TPS already, and since he didn't play a single one yet... Eh. Go smart yourself.

Thanks for all the replies but I won't be missing much storywise if I were to skip Borderlands 1 right? I doubt the multiplayer will be even half as active as Borderlands 2. I just want to have some multiplayer co-op fun. Not worth getting it to play solo, I think.

Yes, you are absolutely right. Knowing Borderlands 1 and TPS's story in full isn't really necessary, you even get a short recap on the start, so have fun!

BL1 tells you alot of what happens in BL2, else you are doing something and characters raining on you and you dont know wtf is going on
for *hearts* sake even Marcus (no refunds) is shown as 1st thing you see from npc's in BL1 lol...

He doesn't need to be a lore-master.
