What this guy said
You'll forget about it in a few levels
Sniper for long distance, shotgun for close up and personal.
Up to you which you need - there is no logical choice.
I generally choose the sniper, because claptrap is so annoying. :)
The shotgun requires you to get up close and personal, and that's not something you want to do. Besides, you can find other (better or just as good) shotguns in the toilets and chests around Blackburn Cove.
On TVHM and UVHM, it doesn't really matter because a green rarity, non-elemental gun won't do anything your current gear can't do, even if it's at a higher level.
Just remember that unless they're unique (blue with flavor text, and you don't get to choose between two pieces of gear anyway), rewards for missions are usually bad. You can find better gear by just farming a vending machine, and if you do choose to use them, they'll be obsolete a couple of levels later anyway.
