Mission progress is based on that of the hosts. The people joining will not have their mission progress saved to their singleplayer but will keep their character progression and items (which is the important part). When joining someone's game, you will spawn near them. Same goes for if someone joins your game.
Looting is pretty bad unless your playing with friends because there is only a single set of loot when dropped and a douche player could just steal everything and leave others with nothing, coop with friends is where this game shines.
Depending on the mode (normal, true, ultimate vault hunter) enemies levels will be different. In normal, enemies are scaled to the host. In true and ultimate, they are scaled to the highest player.
Hope this helps.
If you are worried about something like this, I would reccomend making a back-up of your save data (for the character you are planning on playing with at least) before joining a game just for added reassurance. I've heard there are ways to change your save data after the fact to restart these missions, but I don't have experience with them.
You can use gibbed to reset missions back to the incomplete state.
* Raw Tab
* Mission Playthru Item
This opens a collection control window with three MissionPlaythruData items listed on the left-hand-side, pick the one for normal/tvhm/uvhm as desired.
* Mission Data (item on the righ-hand-side of the collection control Window above)
That opens a new collection control window with a very long list of MissionData items on the left-hand-side. Choose the mission you want to reset, then on the right-hand-side set
ActiveObjectiveSetIndex = 0
ObjectiveProgress = all 0s
Status = Active
Ask here for people to add you. Then build into the friend lists of those you click with. Takes a bit, but allows you to mostly skip the numerous asshats out there.
