Commando - What's the point of the phalanx shield skill?

So apparently the phalanx shield skill adds a shield around your turret sort of like the ion loaders shields. However this shield is completely useless considering the shields breaks and disapears after enemies shoot it like 3 times. I have no idea why but the shield never stays up for me every time an enemy shoots it, the shield goes away and enemies are able to kill me.

I've capped Axton four times to 72 and this is the current OP8 build I'm using around the Rough Rider shield. The only reason I use the Phalanx skill is simply because it only takes up one point and it does buy you a little extra time. Going through Digistruct Peak on the over powered levels or even the latter stages of UVHM a couple seconds can make all the difference.

In the end game (61-OP8) you will really be using those turrets as a barricade keeping Axton from some serious baddies. Right now at level 45 I can see how you might think its a waste but after twenty more levels you will seriously appreciate anything that gives you that extra edge.
