That's why you can only have 4 weapon slots. The rest you have to TAB out into your inventory. Such a waste of Keyboard buttons...Oh, that's right I forgot we're restricted to the crap inferior console controller pad design.
On that note: I believe PC gamers should pay less for their crappy ported games, as we're being denied our keyboard's potential, and having our mouse made obsolete too with stupid UI glitches.
I just really assumed it was because you only have two hands and limited body space so wouldn't be able to carry more than 4 readily usable weapons to begin with. Plus why would you really need more? It's very, very rare I'm using more than 2 weapons (+grenades +action skill) during any given encounter. 4 slots just means I have a FFYL option avaialable and an extra slot just for fun.
To be able to hotkey select, saves awkwardly having to hit TAB, look in your inventory, deal with the console-itis glitchy inventory slot swap-over system, JUST TO PICK ANOTHER FRICKIN' WEAPON! >.<
You CAN hit 1-4 on the keyboard and swap weapons that way too. Don't need to just use the middle mouse. It would be nice if you could hotkey 9 that way.
But when you do go to inventory on Skyrim it is a more complex process than on Borderlands, and yes you can carry a good many more items, but point is, this is not Skyrim.
Since when could Bethesduh design a good user interface?
... in fact, since when could Bethesduh design a good game?
That's a big part of why there are a billion mods for them; they can't tie up loose ends, or grasp intelligent game design, or deliver a polished product if their lives depended on it.

Well, to be honest, once you assign 8 weapons, all you really do after that is press a number key...which is far easier than shuffling around in the BL inventory...
It's just a different way by how console style play is like.
Here's a good point:
Though the wheel selection feature like seen in GTA 5 and Red dead redemption (of which both I own on PS3) Is actually my favourite inventory system I have come across so far.
For example, in BL2, EVERY time I want grenades, shields or to look at something...I have to scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN every time...The time it takes to change the weirdly organised category selection around in a feeble attempt to save time scrolling down is also a bit 'tediore'...
Really? I think there are many who would not agree with that, myself included. Morrowind for me was great with no mods, I have many mods for Oblivion, the kind that add quest, castles, houses and even towns. I have some on Skyrim as well, I know there is a UI mod, I guess it must be better but I do fine as is.
I suspect there will never be a perfect game, but they have made good games.
Try this, open the inventory and go to the equipped item slot in question, press E, you will note that if you had highlighted you shield you are now looking at shields, grenade mods, class mods, relic, weapon. Yes, you can equip that way. The idea is set your weapon equip slots for what you are about to do, plan ahead a bit, or if you did not know run back and equip.
