Do melee damage upgrades affects krieg when he throws his axe instead of using it as melee?

No, the game treats the throwing axe as a Pistol (not kidding). You can also boost it with pistol stuff.

Makes no sense, since when i max out all melee upgrades for his axe, whenever i throw it, it still does insane amount of damage, without upgrading any pistol-related skills.
Level 50 krieg that can melee with ~200K dmg would do around ~170K damage when the axe is thrown.

that's because melee buffs suck in this game.

still, it IS treated as a pistol. I encourage you to get a Sheriffs Badge from the Sheriff in Lynchwood and try it out yourself. It boosts Pistol Fire rate and damage.

ok i tested it; the thrown axe gets boosts from both melee and pistol buffs (apart from damage).

Well i asked this because i wanted to know the best way of killing Hyperious. I used melee upgrades in the Mania tree till 'release the beast' and then the Hellburn tree till 'Elemental Empathy' (i'm level 54). Both of these skills give me free health, but that damn boss seems to always put me in badass psycho mutant mode which means i got no chance in hitting him with fire weapon.
Eventually he puts me in 'Fight for your life' till im dead since there's nothing i can kill to revive myself (tried to keep alive one of his minions but it only made things worse).
Tips?

Because the thrown buzz axe is treated as a pistol, bonuses (apart from damage) towards pistols affect the thrown buzz axe.

Notably throwing speed is increased by fire rate, which itself may be increased through various means such the Sheriff's Badge, Wound and "Chaotic" Barbarian class mods, the Embrace the Pain and Elemental Elation skills, and Badass Rank bonus. Throwing speed is also increased when Krieg is teamed with Axton equipped with a Gunner class mod.

This internal classification as a pistol allows Krieg to throw a volley of multiple buzz axes if he activates his action skill while under the influence of the Grog Nozzle's "drunk" effect.

It's been a while that I played Krieg, but if I were you I'd try to get some other ways to heal yourself against Hyperius. His double novas will knock you out otherwise eventually.

The most comfortable way is Grog Nozzle & Chain Lightning in my experience. When his first nova gets you below 50%, instantly switch to the Grog and throw a Chain Lightning at him. You don't even have to aim, it will immediatly restore 100% health. As long as you have more than 50% health you dont have to worry, the novas will be healthgated and a single nova can't kill you then.
