Re: the turret - works well in the last main difficulty but in the OP'd special level area it can be weak pretty quickly. That said, if you get the double-turret that can slag, very helpful.
Heavy turret reliance = green tree, Axton being tougher + turret cool down = red tree. The blue (middle) tree all I minimally cared about was getting to turret deploy range/health then I'd ignore it unless/until I have spare points. Some probably don't even care about that (longer range deploy can take some getting used to, to get it to land where you want it to land).
As to "best" - no clue. But for general use I always ended up something like this (for lvl 72).

...I'm sure someone will come in and say how terrible the above is, but it worked perfectly fine solo or when I played with my spouse. Crisis Management isn't taken if you're trying to keep a shield full for some reason (eg, certain gear). I'm not a "sneaky"/long distance player tho, so I found it useful.
If you get Logan's pistol+Absorb shield, I had great fun with Axton with some of the powerful e-tech rocket launchers, because replenishing launcher ammo (Logan's) and fast weapon swap. Made the early OP'd levels quite easy.
...Axton's a lot of fun - although my personal fave class is still the Siren. She fits my playstyle more.
Edit: A lot of people dislike "Grit" because of its low chance per point spent, but I have played with putting 3 pts in it, before. Even with just 3 pts, you'll notice it proc somewhat often and it can save your butt now and then. But since it's still totally random, most of the time I don't bother with it.
Gear: Shield - Blockade (Very tanky).
COM - Master Grenadier (It will give you an extra 5 to the grenadier skill giving you 20 nades total).
Guns - Slag Pimp, it's all you need to slag enemies.
Finally you want a Fastball and explosive relic to boost it even more.
With the Pimp to slag you will be able to insta kill even badass enemies at OP8 with this build, even easy to aim as the Fastball throws almost perfectly straight even at long range (there is a little compensation at range)
You don't have to worry much about nade ammo either as once you go below 10 nades it will start dropping more, every enemy or almost every enemy should drop a nade which means that you never get lower unless you miss a lot of Fastballs.
Also make sure to get the skill that lets you throw nades in fight for your life which will allow you to instantly get back up if you go down.
Anyway, in the end game, the build is mostly depends on the class mod you have, which i think the Legendary Soldier is by far the best for Axton, so here is my build:

Note that this is a build for ENDGAME, as slag will be more and more crucial, and the actual sentrie's damage will be less and less critical.
I havent tested this myself but it is said that the Laser Sight skill for the sentry actually makes it less accurate. Maybe its a rumor, still it doesnt matter, the sentrie's purpose is to slag, and it doesnt need all the bullets to hit the target for that to happen.
Imo a slagger sentry that lasts long enough is one of the best tactics on taking down Terra on UVHM.
