It doesn't sound like you missed your chance at a level 50 reward. You said the mission was level 14. If so, that's in Normal Mode (the first playthrough). When you finish the main game in Normal Mode, you unlock True Vault Hunter Mode (TVHM), which is the second playthrough. You'll get the chance to do all of the same missions over again in TVHM, but at a higher level.
If you leave that mission unaccepted until you finish the main game in TVHM, you can then accept the mission at level 50 and get a level 50 reward.

You're welcome. It is a lot to absorb, especially if you didn't play "Borderlands 1" (it also had multiple playthroughs).
More or less the same as True/Ult vault hunter but easier I guess.
It's true that you could do the mission with a different character and pass the reward (shield), but it will be a higher level in TVHM and UVHM. And the OP mentioned getting one at level 50, and you won't get a level 50 version in Normal Mode.
