What is wrong with you?
His point is that they can (and should) play it through Steam Proton; it's on the latest update and works better than the native Linux version (and better than the non-DXVK Windows version, for that matter).
Or are there some Linux distros that have problems with Steam Proton?
I don't know much about the Linux version of the game. But it's not impossible that there are indeed still other people using it, even if the OP thinks it's crap.
Yeah, there's no reason to remove it; OP's "problem" isn't one at all. But I'd be interested to know why anyone (aside from "purism" cultists) would want/need to use it.
I don't use Linux but may give it a try soon for performance related reasons, namely just wondering if dxvk etc will run better on Linux itself. But I'm curious how do you go about telling Steam to use the Windows version of a game when there is a native linux version as well?
You can right click on the game and click on properties, in the compatibility tab there is a check box that says "Force the use of a specific Steam Play Compatibility tool".
In this game specifically, the game through Proton doesn't only run much better than the native port, but actually better than the game runs on Windows. You might have an issue with the game crashing sometimes if you set the textures to High, but if you keep it set to medium it runs perfectly for me.
If you have an AMD card then I suspect the game might run better on Linux with DXVK than on Windows with DXVK because the open source AMD drivers are just better than the Windows drivers.
Sure. But that has nothing to do with my point. It's a "whataboutism".
If it's still possible to play the game (at all), natively, using the Linux OS, then there may still be people doing that (even if they can't access the latest DLC), and it's not fair for the OP to be trying to make decisions for them.
Yes, it sucks that the Commander Lilith DLC screwed up the game for people (regardless of which OS they were using), and it sucks that Gearbox/2K wasn't paying Aspyr to do the work to make the ports. Yes, Gearbox/2K either actively, or through negligence, decided to jettison fans/customers of the game who were using the Mac OS, or Linux.
(Honestly, I think it's amazing that the Mac Client of BL2 finally got a v1.8.5 update at all. But I doubt BL1 and BL:TPS ever will, and both of them used to run natively on the Mac as well (back before Catalina) (and possibly Linux too, although I'd have to check that).
But all that said, Gearbox/2K actually does have the right to make that choice. You don't have to be happy about it (I'm certainly not), but they are the IP developer/publisher. That is actually their decision to make. Yes, it sucks being on the wrong side of the business cost/benefit analysis line, but it is part of what they get to do with their product.
So yes, the OP is right. The Linux version of this game is trash.
