Shift Codes = Cheats?
So what's the deal with these shift codes?
I read that Gearbox will give you these keys. I see the pinned thread...
These keys give you powerful weapons sometimes out of that box. I got 9 keys with my game purchase and found some decent stuff but nothing too special. Still got 4 keys.
My question is, are using these keys considered cheating? Does the game not give me more keys as I play it? Can I get a key from an in game quest? I've yet to see this.
Just looking for thoughts and opinions on this unique game feature I've never come across before.

Why would it be cheating if they hand out these keys.

Also, as you already noticed, they are not totally uber OP items, just so-so.
It's useful to gear up for UVHM, or when you have trouble keeping your gear up to level.

Think of it as a shortcut to some decent(ish) gear at times when you are pressed for equipment or don't have much luck with world drops.

Keys only come from Shift codes, you won't get any more than the game gave you for owning certain DLC.

They give out key codes for you to redeem at random times. Like , |x|SiriuS|x| said , the idea is to give DECENT gear thats up to your level if you're struggling to get good drops and you're in a crunch against a hard mission or struggling to get past a higher leveled boss , etc etc. You cant get the keys from any quest. Simply gearbox (makers of Borderlands) being nice and understanding it can be difficult to find good loot as good drops can be rare. Just something nice for the players.

UVHM , this means ultimate vault hunter mode. Its another playthrough of the entire game , just way harder.

The games comes in three consecutive playthroughs (think difficulties)
Normal (a new character starts here), and after you beat the main game's endboss, you unlock "True Vault Hunter Mode" (TVHM, the second playthrough).
Enemies are much tougher, have higher resistances (and drop better (or rather level appropriate) loot. And you can play it with that toon, all of your gear and levels.

If you beat the main game's endboss again, you unlock the 3rd playthrough, "Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode" (UVHM).

This is where ♥♥♥♥ gets real. Enemies are really tough, the loot is up to that level, and everything levles with you.
Meaning, if you accept a mission at level, say, 56, enemies will be in that level range no matter what and the loot will too.

The general level ranges (suggested) are
0-35 Normal mode
35-50 TVHM
50+ UVHM

Additionally, you can reset UVHM as many times as you wish, should you want to repeat missions and stuff.

And when I say "The keys are good to gear up for UVHM", I mean that should you level past 50 in the 2nd playthrough, you will have a very hard time in UVHM since enemies are at your exact level. So the chest gives you gear at your level, giving you a fighting chance if you happen to enter UVHM too late. 2 or 3 levels above 50 already make your life a living hell in UVHM, since you won't have any gear at that level.
Level 55 enemies in UVHM are almost impossible to beat with level 50 gear.

Edit: Additionally, you can freely switch between unlocked modes, so you can go to the main menu, reload your character and select normal mode, if you so wish. This is important, because when you mess up during the 2nd run and go way above 50, you have literally zero chance to reach the Golden Chest in Sanctuary.

luckily, you can then just switch to the 1st or 2nd playthrough, go to Sanctuary to gear up at the chest, and then return to UVHM.

Sorry, that post got longer than I wanted it to.

Sounds like this is similar to Borderlands 1 then.
Playthrough 1 was easy, playthrough 2 enemies got stronger, once I beat the boss in playthrough 2 the enemies levelled to my same level evrywhere and then it got very difficult.
Thanks for the info Sirius

Wrong thread for player searching dude

Also, if you think gaming is your "expertee" as you say in your profile, it's pretty clear spelling isn't. :)

How is getting a random purple-rarity/e-tech item with random part combinations using a finite resource that the game devs provide you with even remotely the same thing as using a third party software to add a specific legendary/unique/seraph/pearlescent item with specific parts that you want?

With one, you still trigger in–game RNG–based loot mechanics with an intended means to acquire gear by the devs, while with the other you circumvent the RNG–based loot drop mechanics altogether.

They are absolutely not the same thing.

Burn this thread and let it die.

True, that. One of my favorite shottys in the game.
Also, many people like Plasma Casters for certain builds, so it has that going for it, too.
(not a fan usually, unless it's the Florentine which does not drop from the Golden Chest).

Plus class mods which are rare enough to find and farm can make a difference, especially if you have not found a blue or purple one yet.

But all in all, it's more of a help-yourself-get-through-a-tough-spot kind of deal than anything else.

It's purple at least, and when you don't have anything better, it's good.

The Sanctuary golden key chest delivers magenta (E-tech) arms. Useful to chase these at lower levels before seraphs, lengendaries and pearlescents become more available. http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/E-tech

Is that the prize for beating the boss or something?
