I personally do share the loot unless I see something orange I can use. That said it's mostly a design thing. You're supposed to "compete" for loot.
Or rarther, the lack of any kind of balance.
But yeah, I play with friends, and it's never been a problem to decide who gets what, and no one picks up stuff just because it's rare. We see who benefits the most from it (For example, Zero can most likely take that legendary sniper rifle). With randoms, I'd imagine the loot system to be a real pain.
Edited: It's never, not "ever", obviously
But to me, a major part of the whole "co-op" concept is to let the loot go to the person in which it will benefit the party as a whole best. And just because an item drops that is better than what you're personally carrying at that moment, doesn't mean it wouldn't be an even better improvement on someone else. Besides, that just means the next similar item to drop will more likely go to you!
The only way to do that is duel each other (If not making it dependant on "ninja skills")
So you have the option to duel for it, right?
But dueling is utterly broken because of the way the characters are set up.As opponents, they are completely unbalanced towards each other, making the duel system worthless except for funzies.
Racing to the loot is fighting enough it doesn't have to be blown out of proportions. xD
And hey I didn't make the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ games I hate that philosophy too, blame Blizzard....
Sadly people just take the loot when i host :/ like if you open chests and see someone open a chest with a orange in it, sure it barely happens i know, but then they just quickly take it and does not say a word about it.
But "Racing to the loot" is what I meant by being a "Loot-Ninja" - It's not the most accepted tactic. Other players may still have to do with a boss or other mobs, all the while the greedy types haul off the good stuff.
So, there really is no functional "Loot System" in coop, only what the players agree on beforehand.
Torchlight II, for example, drops everything client-side. Every player gets their own loot, which is one of the nicer features of that game.
Of course, this sometimes means one or two players take longer to sift through the drops, but stil.
I agree with this philosophy 100%. When you're cool to your teammates, they're more likely to be cool to you in return. Personally, I only take rare loot if I'm convinced that nobody else on the team wants it, or already has it. If I don't get some super shiny equipment, it's not a big deal: I can always try again, so it isn't worth ruining the overall team experience.
Random people don't care about you. They'll just take everything and have a look at them later to see if they really need them. If you spend more than 5 seconds looking at an item, you'll probably get nothing.
You might be right, but in my view it's no big loss. I'm not going to really agonize over item drops in any game. Besides what I'd posted above, the fact is that I enjoy playing the game with or without teammates. Getting some cool loot is definitely a nice plus, but there's nothing I can't live without. If I didn't enjoy simply playing the game, I'd find another game to play
