You could always just switch to a Hellborn build and mostly use guns.
Watch the videos and decide what playstyle fits you best:
Krieg / Melee

Krieg / Hellborn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIMbjqb28U0
Zer0 / Ninja
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8WvmKzhYkA
Maya / Pimpernel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrtselMC3Fk
Try them all, settle on the one that fits you.
simple.
Hellborn mostly uses the "Flame of the Firehawk" - shield ( mission reward ). Other shields are viable, but simply not as good.
Also, a small note on Krieg: he's rather back-loaded and therefore you won't get most of his good stuff until later on.
Edit: I mean, arent all the shields upgrades (rate, capacity and recharge delay) bad for melee characters?
For the Flame of the Firehawk, once it starts recharging you need it to be fully recharged before the special effect can trigger again.
Wow, is it a different experience. Now I understand why so many people feel she is a bit underpowered in later stages. Currently I'm at level 58 and am stunned at the dropoff in her offensive capabilities, and how much of the Cataclysm tree scales so poorly. I've rearranged my skills a couple of times for greater effect, but even simple things like Constructors are giving me a tough time. I've never had the slightest bit of trouble with Constructors when using other characters. Maya is still fun, but the gameplay is completely different in UVHM.
And of course, the RNG Gods are not being kind to me. I've never had such a run of bad luck equipping any character. I even spent 35 Golden Keys trying to upgrade my arsenal a bit and got nothing but Bandit and Dahl trash... LOL.
I too think Krieg looks way better then Zero, but in the end I cant even see the skin while Im playing. hehehehe
Hmmm, didnt know about Maya being hard to play in UVHM. Good to know about it.
Just watched all the videos PipHoff posted, related to Southpaw Steam, and the Commando too looks nice! Always thought he was boring.
The thing is, I dont have much time to play the game, so I can basicaly make one character and stick to him. That's why so much overthinking... xD
This is my level 72 build. Some comments on my skill choices in Cataclysm:
Flicker- since I use Life Tap, increasing DOTs means more self-healing.
Helios- 1 point if I choose to use Legendary Binder, but can be put somewhere else.
Ruin - the damage from shock and corrosive aren't great, but the slag is what's important.
Blight Phoenix - 1 point to stun melee attackers.
Reaper, Chain Reaction, Foresight - increases your damage output.
Immolate - helps you get back up when downed.
So while I'm using skills in a different manner than what they were originally intended for, they still have their uses.
Ah very cool of you, thanks for explaining your thoughts on the individual skills. I appreciate that. Clearly I still have a lot to learn when it comes to Maya. Self healing has been a particular challenge. I'll try it out.
It definitely took me awhile to adjust my UVHM play style from Zero to Maya, but now that I have a more effective skill tree I'm having a much better time.
