Thanks for the info!
without spoilers, I tend to do a lot of sidequests in playthru 1, and I was lvl 36ish when i finished the vanilla game, then I did the sidequests and gradually got to like lvl 40ish from the quest exp (the bad guys are capped at lvl 35 for play thru 1, so I wasn't getting much exp from kills at that point).
Playthru 2 is the one that ppl give a lot of advice on. If you want to get a lvl 50 version of the quest reward, then you want to skip the quest during playthru 2. important - don't even get the quest in your list. after you defeat the main storyline at lvl 50, you can go back to playthru 2, and the quests will have their level set to lv 50. then you can do the quest, earn the lvl 50 version of the reward.
Is that worth the trouble? well it all depends. If you want to get your character up to lvl 72, you won't still be using lvl 50 items. still a lot of ppl spend extra time at lvl 50 to get some good gear to give themselves a head-start for playthru 3.
playthru 3 (Ult Vault Hunter Mode) lifts the lvl cap to 61 (or 72 if you have all DLCs enabled), and the monsters are the same level as you are. Because of this, tehre's a lot of advice not to level up to lvl 55 before starting UVH mode. if you did, the monsters would be lvl 55, but your guns (leftover from playthru 2) would be capped at lvl 50. You would have a real hard time gettng started.
So, the advice is, if you are going to spend a lot of time looking for gear at lvl 50, disable the DLC for the level cap increase while you're doing that. Then once you have the gear you want, and you're ready to start UVHM, turn the DLC back on, and start at lvl 50 with lvl 50 guns, against lvl 50 bad guys.
Anyways, have fun!
(Salvador: Killin Bad Guys is ALWAYS FUN!)
Levels in Normal Mode (first playthrough):
If you have Digistruct Peak (included with the second level cap increase), that is level 35. Period.
The Pirate and Torgue DLC's have a range from 15 - 30.
The Hammerlock and Tina DLC's have a range from 30 - 35.
The Headhunter DLC's have a range from 15 - 35.
In the 4 campaign DLC's (Pirate, Torgue, Hammerlock and Tina), new missions and maps will generally scale to your level, within the ranges listed above. For example, if you start the Pirate DLC at level 15, the first mission and the first map (Oasis) will be level 15. But if you then leave it and come back later, when your character is level 20, and complete that first mission, the next mission and map will be level 20. Oasis stays at level 15.
The Headhunter DLC's stay fixed at the level they were when you entered them and got the first mission. They only have one map. There is 1 side mission in each HH DLC, but it will be at the same level as the main mission.
That is all in Normal Mode. The levels are, of course, higher in TVHM (second playthrough). Everything in the main game (excluding already accepted missions) in TVHM will scale up to 50 after you complete the final story mission. I am _hoping_ that the scaling in the DLC in TVHM will be similar, but I haven't gotten to the point of testing that yet.

Dumb question - all the
"fixed at the level they were when you entered them"
etc stuff is per each character, right?
Absolutely. Each character's mission level, progress, etc. is separate.
