Steam is not the problem here, Gearbox's horrible choice is.
To explain further, even if you disable crossplay, the game will still use SHiFT servers which are insanely inferior to Steam.
Why kill this game?

Although surprisingly the new Tales game is not an exclusive so far.
I highly doubt that ♥♥♥♥ servers will ever be reversed though..
Thanks everyone for the clarification, its really sad because BL2 is by far the best of the whole series. But what has been mentioned here still somehow doesnt clarify one of my questions (or maybe i am just too dumb to not see it, that's quite possible) - Why one of my PCs has absolutely no problem joining BL2, creating session on both EGS and Steam, playing with ppl etc etc and the other PC not? That is what puzzles me hardcore.
Some people just have tough luck. You can try verifying file itnegrity, or deleting all the config-files (dont delete your savefiles or at least make a backup). But other than that - nothing much we can say. It seem to just affect random people.
It is not your fault, nor your hardware, it can work and just randomly stop working, or start working again. For over 3 Months i had problems playing multiplayer - neigh impossible to join the games of friends, and same for them even. And then it just randomly started working when i was the host... for about a month.
Agreed. Your's is a tricky issue to solve assuming your systems both meet or exceed the minimum software/hardware specifications for whatever game(s) are of interest and assuming that you've got a good and stable internet connection(s).
Unless you maybe a seriously talented programmer, I'd ask Steam Support for help (upper left hand corner of this screen click the grayed-out Help then scroll to Steam Support and click it) or seek support from the game's current owners / manufacturers which bought Gearbox ~ the Swedish firm Embracer Group AB ~ here's their Wiki Page with all you need to know to contact Embracer directly ~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embracer_Group

I was dumb enough to let BL2 through the firewall and saw an EULA pop up. The EULA disappeared before I'd even clicked anything or could read it.
Now, whenever I launch BL2, I get stuck on the "Set display name" box. It keeps throwing "There was an internal error setting the display name" no matter what I enter, I can't close the box and I can't click anything else in the menu. Can't play, can't do anything.
In other words, it literally locks me out of my own game. Jesus f*cking christ, this move is one of the dumbest I've seen, and the new system is monkey level preschool coded.
I wish steam could just make it their TOS that you can't nilly willy launch something on steam with steamworks, then randomly change it later, add new login requirements or drastically altered EULAs, etc. bs like this.
Will try downgrading later, but for now it's just a broken game, pissed me off enough that I don't want to bother with it. Sour taste with the whole company and their affiliates.
