All Moxxi weapons can heal you for a % of any damage you cause while holding one. The lowest is 2.5%, the highest is 65%. It is possible to get the Bad Touch - corrosive smg the first time you reach Sanctuary, by tipping Moxxi. But it will not be very effective at healing you - you will barely notice it. 2.5% healing.
There is another gun, The Rubi that you can get from Moxxi later that has something like 25% iirc healing. This is from the Rakkaholics Anonymous mission available after the WEP. Much more useful, especially if you get the slag version.
The highest healing one is the Grog Nozzle and that is a mission weapon from the Tiny Tina DLC. That DLC starts at 30 in normal mode, so forget this one until you do TVHM.
Transfusion grenades will help a lot. Keep an eye on the vending machines.
Maybe change your playstyle and not get hit so much? Use cover, use Deception, kill enemies from a longer range...
Later I will have to do Boom Bewm and spawned enemies constantly rush you. At least Maya has some ability to heal at level 6. Axton is easiest.
actually Z00t, the best version of the Rubi to get, is a corrosive version. At least that way, hitting Loaders and Constructors with it constantly damages them while healing you at the same time (especially if you hit them more than once)
"Do people that play Zer0 early game have to run back to a vending machine a lot?" I'd rephrase the question to ~~~ Do people that play any of BL2's six Playable Characters at any level grouping in the game NVHM TVHM and or UVHM "have to run back to .. a lot"? Of course not unless they've got winning on their minds ... .
Let me be clear ~~~ aside from the typical stuff like killing Raid Bosses, completing mission quests & amassing Legendaries etc., less obvious stuff to noobs but even more important as vets will tell you is "healing" which is a "major thing" in this game ~~~ players spec'ed most heavily into their maximum health-giving skills and those able to equip the best healing-type items from their inventories tend to win. Those who don't are doomed to lose.
So yes the few unusual guns giving some relative health benefits like the pitiful amounts of health provided by the Rubi ... well these guns are surely more healthful than others but not by very much. The significant places for health benefits include certain class mods & shields ~ Anshin can be quite a talented Shields manufacturer ~ try out their Neogenator Shield for its awesome "Health Insurance Policy" LOL & you'll become a quick believer in the wisdom that defines its Red Text c/o the philosopher Henry Thoreau: "For an impenetrable shield stand inside yourself". Whoa! Oops yeah sorry ~~~ can drop from Spycho in Frostburn & from Sully in TK Baha's Bloody Harvest. FInally, you might wanna consider gaming BL2 using one of the game's best health-oriented playables like Maya ... . Have fun
Once you have a decent way of regenerating health through damage (either skills, transfusion-grenades or lifesteal-weapons) increases in max-health even become detrimental (health-gate mechanics).
That also means before gaining those (so for most players that is till finishing NVHM) gaining Max-health is still a thing you should do.
You will get a sniper rifle as reward, which is capable of clearing the area of Midgemong with ease, so no need for any healing items etc.
At level 6 Zero, your options for healing will really be the Survivor Com and Second Winds. You shouldn't have that much trouble clearing lvl 6 psychos as any character. I think the enemies respawn if you move away from the boss zone (I did notice enemies respawning more than usual in this area), not so much based on time. Anyway, this can be tricky when you start as Zero, but it's very doable: do the Bad Hair Day mission first to grab the sniper rifle from Hammerlock, this will make killing psychos trivial (aim for the head, they often stand still and are very easy to snipe). Swap to a close range gun like a shotty or SMG to clear those Badasses at short range or if you get rushed.
