Figure out which savefile is for the character you will be farming the item with. Save/quit and it will, of course, be the one with the most recent modification date/time. It will be 'save000x.sav', where x is a numeral. Is lf you have a lot of saves, it will be 'save00xx.sav'. There will be a matching save000x.sav.bak, with the same numeral in place of x (or xx, as the case may be).
First turn off Steam Cloud. You can re-enable it when you are done readonly farming. Do one of the missions, say, "Whoops". After Herbert explodes, travel to Wurmwater. Once you spawn on the ship across from Scarlett, alt-tab to windows explorer. Navigate to your save directory. Make sure you know which are the proper files for your character. For both the proper save000x.sav and save000x.sav.bak, rightclick the file and choose properties. At the bottom of the properties dialog, tick 'readonly'. Click ok/apply/whatever it is. Again, do this for the savefile and the .bak one.
Go ahead and turn the mission in. Take whatever gun she offers. If it is a keeper, fasttravel to sanctuary and put it in your STASH, NOT THE BANK. The stash is saved in your profile.bin, not your character save, so you can keep items you have put in there, even if your savefile is readonly. Once you have an item you wish to keep in the stash, save/quitting will write it to your profile.bin. If you dont want the gun she gives you, save/quit. So whether you have put a gun in the stash or taken one you dont want, you have saved and quit. To try again, SELECT CHARACTER AGAIN. DO NOT CHOOSE CONTINUE. Select character reads the savefile on disk, the one you made readonly, and therefore has not turned the mission in and does not have the sandhawk you just took. Choosing continue uses the copy of your savefile already loaded in RAM, which does have the gun and has completed and turned the mission in. If you do select continue by accident, just quit again and select character again. Just keep on taking whatever she offers, putting keepers in the stash and reselecting your character each time. If for some reason you want more than 4 versions of whatever you are farming, have another character empty the stash once it's full and then save quit and reselect your farming character to continue.
This works the same for "Don't Copy That Floppy", "Uncle Teddy", or any other mission reward situation.
When you are satisfied with what you have collected, go back and untick the readonly attributes on your savefile and its backup. You can then turn the mission in one more time and save it to your character so that you can continue with the story line. Dont forget to turn Steam cloud back on if you use it.
