Gate blocks access to "Collect crumpets in Lair of Infinite Agony"

You have to continue the DLC's story to unlock the lair of infinite agony; this side mission is intended to be completed as you progress through the story, since you will find crumpets in almost every area in the DLC. If you have already unlocked the lair of infinite agony then that is quite strange, use fast travel to get there.

The game is far from clear.

Which mission unlocks it?

I have tried Dwarven Allies and The Beard Makes the Man but again, there is a locked gate:

This game is very frustrating, at times. It's fine having a non-linear mission layout style but at least make it clear when you need to do a certain mission before you can do another.

Dude, check the map. During Dwarven Allies the path is clear, there is no gate whatsoever. This gate in your screenshot only opens after you beat the boss and want to come back.

This is the map with me having Dwarven Allies active and whilst I'm looking at that locked gate:

If I don't have to go through the gate, where do I go?

I already have 2 of the 4 letters but I see no way to get to the third (which is on the map linked to above)

You've not completed the quest to unlock Lair of infinite agony yet so won't be able to advance that particular side quest until you have.

The second letter is at the jumping puzzle, from there you should just turn around and continue down the path.

I have no idea which quest unlocks the gate and the game certainly isn't helping.

So you're halfway through the map, just go back to jumping puzzle and continue. There are NO hidden paths there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's the one that you have selected on that screenshot. Do it and you'll advance.

None of the runes are on other maps. And none are beyond the gate because the runes unlock the gate.

I must have done the jumping puzzle then gone backwards instead of going down a path you say exists to the third one.

I'll pop into the game now and check.
