As for bullets, the Slagga SMG is a great weapon for slagging enemies, especially if you can loot one with Maliwan grip: the grip that extends as an arch underneath the gun. Any Maliwan weapon with a matching grip has a relatively high chance to score elemental effects so that could probably be a goto as well if you want to find a less rare weapon. It doesn't necessarily have to do damage at all. A high elemental effect chance or alternatively lots of bullets is enough to make slagging feel more consistent.

As for grenades, bouncing betties and transfusions, singularities and cluster grenades are all great synergy with the slag element because they can hit the same enemy multiple times, which reassures that you slag something without having to throw several grenades. Again, there are skills to make grenade looting and utilisation better for some characters.
For certain enemies like Terramorphous, slag bouncing betty grenades work well, because the thing keeps working for several seconds, keeping him slagged for longer. These also work well against mobs and can make whole areas purple. Legendary Bouncing Bonny and the seraph Crossfire are top tier, but any rarity are also usable, with varying degrees of success - different child grenades, slag chance etc.
Transfusion, singularity grenades happen once, but imo are less useful than betty types.
For guns, there are lots of choices, but the Slagga is an excellent smg for this. Bandit, so has a large mag, high fire rate but dubious accuracy, and it can slag whole areas without needing to reload. All of the smg makers have slag versions including plasma casters so there are lots of choices. The seraph Florentine is dual element slag and shock.
Premier slag pistol is the Grog Nozzle mission weapon. Very high slag chance and the best healing weapon in the game.
Then there are the various sniper rifles, AR's shotguns, launchers... All have their uses. For basic fire and forget, use a Magic Missile. Which also regens grenades for you.
If you got the mechro you should get a magic missile in normal mode(but to be honest is not really that mandatory cause you can use deathtrap for slagging). Otherwise you are fine with a low level slagga, just invest in weapon swap skills. I believe you are not playing maya or axton if u have those problems.
or Ruin...
Out of the uniques, the Slagga SMG is probably the best slagger in the base game: it fires 3 bullets per shot at high fire rate, meaning that you're very likely to get slag from a volley. And you can spray it on groups of enemies, meaning you can potentially slag more than one of them.
Edit: forgot the Slag Pimpernel, probably the best slagging weapon in the game. It's a slagging sniper rifle that fires 5 pellets per shot. With the high % chance of sniper rifles x 5, you are practically garanteed slag on each shot.
Regular Maliwan SMGs can do ok because of their rate of fire. Pistols and rifles are generally awful slaggers.
Slag grenades are good but less reliable (except maybe the Magic Missile, haven't tried it yet though).
Most classes have skills that can slag, but some of them are very far down the skill tree, so reserved for high level chars.
Sounds like you've experienced stuff... whatever floats your boat mate.
Don't worry baby , happended to alot of girls .
I say this, is because my semi-retired Medic Maya build utilizes both "Ruin" AND "Scorn" (thanks to the 8 extra skill-points from the "Commander Lilith DLC"), so while my Phaselock is on cooldown, I can use "Scorn" as a backup slagging tool.
