But yes, the Ruby is a great alternative as are the Heartbreaker and the Hail. The latter is even a quite powerful boss-killing weapon in its own right with the Bee shield once you get used to its unique bullet pattern. The Kitten is another decent option, it also has awesome close-range damage. The Good Touch & Bad Touch SMGs are good alternatives while levelling (just not great in the end-game).
Aside from Moxxi weapons, any defensive long-range build that takes little damage can survive in UVHM and the OP levels using transfusion grenades and healing skills - Zer0, Axton and Maya, in particular, can do that qutie easily as their playstyes are traditionally defensive.
I’ve also seen people run sniper Zero without the Grog or any Moxxi weapons at all, they usually get their healing from transfusion nades and try to mitigate as much damage received as possible by using Deception at the right moments and picking their fights carefully.
Sal also has his Brawn skill tree, which can turn him into a tank aswell without the need for Moxxi guns.
You don’t really need the Grog if you’re just doing regular mobbing, unless you play really aggresively. IMO the only situations where you “need” a Grog are against raid bosses, on Digi-peak, and in the magic slaughter.
it would be cool to see a Gunzerking build utilizing both the Grog Nozzle AND the Rubi together, just to see how ridiculous (and interesting) things really get
