1st rule of UVHM is use slag. You really should slag them first then switch to the correct weapon for the enemy, shock for shields. corrosive for armour etc.
Because your enemies are a lot tougher to deal with, you may have to re-think your tactics a bit and adjust to the new reality of UVHM. Early UVHM is probably the hardest part of the journey. Once you figure out how to deal with the new enemies etc, slag everything that moves and try to keep your gear on level, it will become a bit easier. Never easy, but as you progress and gain more skill points your character will become more powerful.
The entirety of UVHM can be done solo. All the way to the optional Over Power levels. You do not need to do it in co-op.
Slag everything, match elements to your enemies and maybe adjust your tactics / gameplay a bit.
