What happened before the start of the game?

What im saying is, what caused the vault hunters to be left for dead in a tundra? Was it the cutscene that plays where they're on the train?

It was a trap made by jack for vaut hunters. Your character was lucky enough.To get of it alive so to say

If you haven't met Jack yet (the dude who's puppet explodes in the intro - it looks like him) , yes, he' tried to kill you with that bomb.

If you are not far into the game, let yourself be surprised and don't ask too many questions ;)

The fictional story of BL2 ("Borderlands 2") started with the game BL1 ("Borderlands") so you can play that one to find out all the details.
