There has just been an update that has broken the game in several ways, requiring always on Internet connection, even for solo play, people having issues playing with friends, performance issues etc etc. Until this botched update has been fixed, now is probably not a good time to buy the game.
The game is mostly played solo I think, and most co-op is done with friends. There are just not many open games for playing with randoms. Lots of a$$hats out there who think it is fun to mess with people's characters. If you do use the game matchmaking feature it will only offer you games that have been made public, are close to you in level and close to you geographically, to reduce lag.
There is sufficient content to keep you busy for many hundreds of hours. Or longer. 6 different characters to try out, several DLC's each with their own stories...
If you are just after a game that is a bunch of people going out to kill enemies, yeah, this isn't that kind of game.
