Can't start BL2
Hey guys,

after a long time (8 months) I want to play BD2, but I can't start it.

BD2 has been installed since then the 8 months.

The launcher is starting, but after the click on "play":

My screen goes white for 2 seconds and than black for 2 seconds.
During in this time, I see the mouse loading icon. After this, it goes back on my desktop.
That's the end.

Windows event display shows me the following entrie:

-Faulting application name: Borderlands2.exe, Version: 1.0.19.37311
-Name of the faulty module: bifrost.dll, Version: 0.0.0.0
-Path of the incorrect application: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Borderlands
2\Binaries\Win32\Borderlands2.exe
-Path of the faulty module: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Borderlands
2\Binaries\Win32\bifrost.dll

I tried the following walktroughs:

-Start the game as administrator
-Tried with other resolutions like 1440p, 1080p 720p
-Physics effects by low (settings)
-Reinstall the game
-Using the repair option by Steam
-Nvidia driver clean install (I have Nvidia graphic card)
-delete the file "bifrost.dll

But it still doesn't work.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Don't quote me on this but bifrost I think is connected to the new matchmaking stuff. Don't believe it existed before the accursed update.

Under C:\windows\users\ there is a new user not with my name *ö*** but with something like *$§***.
And there are folders and subfolders that just contain something with bifrost. Nothing else.
New folder, new user, all folders write protected when right clicked / properties.
I mailed tht to support don`t want to mess around with that bs.
The Gearbox owe you a beer, I think :) I solved my problem with your hint. Seems like this **** bifrost doesn't support non-english (or even non-UTF8) characters. My user folder has cyrillic symbols and this new user folder also appeared in my system. I renamed my user folder to contain only engish characters (also in registry) and game started without any troubles. Also bifrost related folders appeared in the my "new" userprofile, but they are not empty - they contain some bifrost-related configuration fies.

So, we must wait till the "Gearbox" will patch bifrost.dll to support cyrillic, nordic and all other non-english characters. Also, it is possible to rename user folder, but this is complicated task and works only on Pro and Enterprise or LTSC editions of windows 10 - I do not recommend heading this way unless you really know what you are doing.

Wow !!! That makes sense.
Aren`t you afraid that renaming the user profile to standard letters won`t kill any other application?
I think I wouldn`t like to try that.

:-) Maybe I get BL3 for free. I think that would be a moderate price for my help :-):steammocking:

Then I noticed a crash error log file in c:\program files(x86)\steam\steamapps\common\Borderlands 2\Binaries\Win32\. I deleted it and got BL2 running again. I have no idea why that simple log file kept me from running my game. So if anyone is struggling with this ♥♥♥♥ and nothing else has fixed the problem, then try before mentioned trick! The log file name was long as hell and it had .log in the end. You can't miss it. I hope this helps.

This ist rlly weard. But there is no Log files in Win32.

Sorry, my bad. The file was something like this "borderlands2_1779011_crash_2020_1_13T17_33_39C0.mdmp". I remembered it had .log in the end but I was wrong. Anyway it seems that deleting this might not solve the problem for everybody. For me it worked though. I hope gearbox will fix their ♥♥♥♥. Sorry again.

I just tried it, but it didn't work :D

Possibly the not starting problem occurs with windows users with non english characters under C:\windows\users
If steam is installed under such user the bifrost.dll creates a new user with kryptic characters.
2k support answered me that they are investigating this, maybe they will patch bifrost.dll to support all usernames.
I hope.

And btw:
I have a second, old, non admin, user named "petra":
Is there a way to mave the complete steam installation to this user and keeping all modifications (like some .ini or .config from BL1 or counterstrike) untouched?

I've written my thoughts about this problem to the 2K support.

Theoretically, if a program is written solidly, it will use the %UserProfile% environmental variable and should not use the "direct" user profile path (like "C:\Users\UserProfileName"). So renaming user profile in the right way (with registry corrections and some other stuff) should not harm other programs. But in fact, once I renamed my user profile the StartIsBack program is crashed (it just has startmenu key unfunctional - I just press it and nothing happens). Also, Firefox extensions stopped working, so I needed to restart Firefox without extensions and then start it normally - to make them work again. But no serious harm is done to my system :)

Theoretically, you may try to move steam related folders to the same location in the new profile and also place the borderlands configuration folder from Documents/MyGames/Borderlands 2 to the new location in the new user profile. Then you launch steam, log into your account and Borderlands 2 should work.
It's even possible, that you just need to log into another user, start steam and it will create all viable folders on its own (once you log into your steam account). Steam only stores configuration in the user profile folder - its installation place is fixed for all users within the same system.

I think about it. I would like to play the presequel friday evening, if there is no official patch until then I might try steam on the petra account and see if tps works there. I think I leave cs:go on my old account, too many manual tweaks that I even don`t remember any more.

Hey guys,

I received a answer from 2K Support (but only in german language, so you have to use google translater or somthing like these):

*********************************************************************************************************

+ Lösche bitte alle .inis im Ordner Documents/My Games/Borderlands 2/WillowGame/Config.

*******************************************************************************************************

I told her that the solutions didn't work, so I'm waiting for a feedback.

Okay, so I renamed my user profile back (for scientific purposes) and game began to crash again. And I found a less radical solution to the bifrost problem.
1. Go to the "scrambled" userprofile and delete the bifrost folder in C:\Users\[scrambled name]\AppData\Local. So you must get empty Local folder under the scrambled-named user profile.
2. Create bifrost folder in the your profile, under the Local folder so the path to it must look like
C:\Users\[Normal name]\AppData\Local\bifrost
3. Open command prompt as administrator and execute
mklink /D "C:\Users\[scrambled username]\AppData\Local\bifrost" "C:\Users\[Normal user name]\AppData\Local\bifrost"
4. If the command finishes successfully - without any errors, then try to launch Borderlands 2. In my case game works just fine.

This solution is working too for me, but I need to do something else for that ! :D

I delete my folder "bifrost" like you saying, and add a "Autorised user" to the group of the wrong folder like this :

If I don't do that, my game crash again because I don't have a total acces to the wrong folder.

try this?
c/program files(*86)/steam/steamapps/common/steamworks shared/-commonredist/directx/jun2010
find the DXSETUP.exe and do it.
