You dont have to set foot in either Lynchwood or Caustic Cauldrons to finish the main story but they are great maps; missing them out would be like buying a house then not using two of the best rooms.
Edit: The best challenge with Lynchwood is to head there immediately after completing Hunting the Firehawk and honking at Bloodshots gate. For some reason it is accessable through the door in the Dust. Then you can take on the enemies in Lynchwood when you are level 10.
Honestly, I love Lynchwood, but ... it kind of comes after the Clan War (which I'm sick of, because I don't actually like the Hodunks or the Zafords) (and unlocking Thousand Cuts) so I haven't done it in ages.
So .. those are two huge side quest lines that I usually skip, and I STILL usually end up at around level 33 before I'm done with the main story.
So short answer: No, feel free to skip Lynchwood if it bugs you.
But the blokes at Lynchwood should be level 26ish. If you can't tackle them at 28-30, then you need to update your gear ASAP.
