Maya is indeed a Siren, and there are some "Siren" things about her (her affinity for Elemental weapons and a general leaning towards SMG use for example). But, Maya is different than Lilith, Phasewalking lends itself to melee, Maya's Phaselock does not.
Phaselock at its most basic is a Crowd Control tool. It'll let you take an enemy out of combat and leave them hanging there for you to snipe and/or shoot at. As you progress, it becomes a powerful battlefield control tool, letting you move, slag, and generally influence even huge groups of enemies relatively effortlessly. Her abilities also provide active healing.
I would say that arguably, Lilith is more powerful than Maya, but I like Maya's ability better.
They're both strong characters with a lot of potential, but Zer0 is considered a little less forgiving.
Keep zero for a later playthrough, till you're more versed with the game.
Yes she's a siren like Lillith but she's not at all similar to Lillith's personality. I don't know if they're good choices for you but they sure were for me. The way I picked 'em was by soloing all six playables legit from Lvl 1 NVHM through TVHM then up to Lvl 50 UVHM and once I'd delivered the six to level 50 in UVHM, I froze them there & selected the pair I'd liked the most playing so far and decided to spend lots more time taking my established investments in Maya & Zer0 all the way up to the game's maximum level 80 / OP8. This is a good way to pick your favorite classes & to experience a good taste of what the early parts of the game are about.
I've never really known what kids in here mean when they discuss "beating" a BL series game cos GBX never defines it either, purposefully leaving it up to us to decide ~ but years ago when I'd just started playing BL2 I reckoned soloing your toon all the way up to max lvl 80 legit meant you'd reached the end of the game. But I wasn't even close lol ~ cos then I discovered that the fun part of the game starts at level 72 OP0 up thru 80 OP8 and then the challenges you devise for your fully built~out toons @ lvl 80.
I woudn't buy all that propaganda you read about what people expect Maya, Zer0 & solo vs coop play to be ~ it's just easily consummable propaganda, nothing more. Playing the BL series solo & legit is what the games were written for & represents the way by which the lion's share of us play ~ it's true that GBX also offers coop as an alternate playing mode for those with a good 4~person team of close friends & family but that situation's kinda rare except for a few.
If you enjoyed Lilith in the original game you will fall in love with Maya and her tool kit.
Be prepared Borderlands 2 is played at a much faster phase then the original!
Z3r0 is great for MP but I'm having some difficulty soloing with him. He's a glass cannon who specializes in heavy shots rather than DPS, and it's imperative to get his build and gear right, or you risk getting stuck. I made the mistake of entering Thousand Cuts with a Maliwan sniper rifle as his only corrosive weapon; heavily defended badass constructors were basically unbeatable.
Honestly, if it's your first playthrough and you're doing it solo, I'd suggest Salvadore or Guage (with an anarchy build). They're both great solo characters.
Maya and Lilith are both very proficient in elements and SMG's. Unlike Lilith, Maya tends to not be as close combat, and tends to stay mid distance. She is also a crowd control Goddess. Most of Maya's coms are the same as Lilith's (except no Tormenter or Spectre), but Maya gets a Nurse com (like Mordecai's Survivor) and has more healing skills than Lilith (no invulnurability though).
That said, Zer0 is a great choice too. If you liked sneaking around as Lilith, and were fond of Phasestrike, then you might like Zer0's melee build. Zer0 can get very nice melee damage, backstab people, and even extend Decepti0n's duration per enemy killed with melee in Decepti0n. He isn't the tankiest, but can certainly hold his own.
You'll be fine either way, and I think you'll have fun either way. Maya might be more comfortable for you (given how you played Lilith), but you seem interested in Zer0, so you might have more fun with him. If you don't like one of them, however, there is no penalty for starting a new playthrough with a new character.
Eh, I've played both Mordecai and Zer0 extensively, and I wouldn't say that Zer0 is less forgiving in regards to healthiness. I'd say they're both equal, and both have mediocre means of regenerating health. Both Righteous Remedy and Innervate are extremely underwhelming.
They don't need it though, cause they never die!!
With Maya, as soon as you get to level 5 you feel impactful and powerful. Just locking down an enemy is incredibly useful and later on you'll be able to stun/group lots of enemies together while your elemental abilities do their work. Cloud kill alone will kill enemies, you don't even have to shoot them beyond procing cloud kill.
In a recent playtrough I came across a group of enemies including a badass nomad. I phase-locked the nomad and hit him with one burst from my veruc. Then I sat back and watched everyone die.
