Will we be able to coop together? (DLC related)

My friend has the standard version of borderlands 2
And theres sale right now on GOTY borderlands2 (all DLCs)

we want to play coop (doing the story quests)
will we be able to play together still? or i'll have to buy the normal version of BL2 inorder to play together in coop

right now, the Handsome Collection bundle is a good deal.
if you have the GOTY version, your friend can only play co-op in the base game with you.

He's the one hosting it (non DLC hoster + DLC player me)

No you will not. It is completely optional. It is up to you if you want to buy it.

No you will not. It is completely optional. It is up to you if you want to buy it.

I didn't understand sorry. We'll be able to play with me being GOTY and him being normal (hoster) ?
