The game has 80 playable levels from its minimum level 1 through NVHM then TVHM then UVHM (UVHM starts by lvl 50) then the OP levels up to the game's maximum level 80 OP8. When you've completed UVHM at level 72 OP0 (and presuming you've installed Upgrade Pack# 2 DLC), you can move onto Level 73 OP1 for the early Digistruct Peak mission and you can complete the mission whenever you choose but by the game's maximum level 80 OP8.
You're aware of the key relationship in the BL series games between game levels, game modes & game experience points ("XP"). A major difference between level 72 OP0 and all of the earlier 71 game levels is that the game suddenly stops accumulating XP for us playable classes at lvl 72 OP0 but the game continues accumulating XP for the non-playable classes (NPCs including all bosses) although suddenly at an exponential rate for them (NPCs including all bosses) starting at lvl 72 OP8 and continues onward for them through endgame at lvl 80 OP8.
Inasmuch as "experience points contribute to the player's ease of play," it's helpful to know in advance that this opportunity stops forever for us players at lvl 72 OP0 in BL2 while our enemies keep getting much much stronger at that same time and through endgame at 80 OP8. In this way the final eight levels of BL2 truly deserve their name of OverPower Levels in the senses that your enemies start out stronger than you and continue getting more & more powerful with every level up to lvl 80 OP8. Because the game stops you (via your XP) from remaining competitive with them at level 72 OP0, your only method for remaining competitive with your enemies up through the OP levels is by keeping your weapons up-to-date and on-level; a secondary method maybe to trial different builds in order to continue refining your Skill Tree through endgame.
Have fun
Unfortunately this also means that for really good weapons like the sandhawk smg, you will be limited in opportunities to get that weapon per character.
I played with a couple characters to learn the most efficient way of doing this, but in essense I play multiplayer to get my low level guy up there in XP as fast as possible and unlock UVHM in the shortest amount of time by focusing on the first 3 playthroughs of the main story.
Once that is done you can go back and play digistruct peak to OP up. You can get to OP5 or OP6 in single player usually without much problem though that OP6 run can be tough. Zero can be an issue depending on your build and loadout but I was still able to get him to OP5 solo (though i'm not using any fancy builds with hiM).
I usually then focus on the DLC's (but you can do it however you want).
I've seen OP8 run done solo before though with a siren fire rate pistol build. I haven't tried it with the community patch yet but I heard they did buff zero's critical ascension cooldown so it's much more effective now.
There's a vid on youtube where a guy gets like 300 stacks of critical ascension and kills the dragons raid boss solo in like 2 minutes with zero...
