I did a Hyperian Gaige Allegiance run about a year ago. Hyperian doesn't make a shield until you hit level 15. It kind of sucked.

sorta hit's that sweet spot for me..
I usually don't use the three Gearbox guns, but if you're not going to use the early green quest rewards then I can see making use of them.
(I personally always use that white Repeater and the white Jacobs shotgun you get from killing Knuckledragger until I start getting quest rewards).
My Maliwan run with Maya went better since shields show up around level 7. No nades until later was annoying, but not horrible. What REALLY sucked was the half hour of killing Captain Flynt by trying to hit his tiny and extremely squirmy crit spot with a white open-sighted fire pistol.
Gets refreshments and gets comfy.
