Ran out of Video Memory error
I just upgraded to an RTX 2080 and now I am getting crashes with a the game saying it ran out of video memory. This never happened with my 1070. I am on the latest drivers and have verified my game cache.

I have the same problem with a 2080. I usually crash after playing for 1 hour... i tried multiple workarounds but nothing seems to fix it so far. I play at 4k with everything maxed at 80+ FPS. The game is barely using 3gb's of memory yet it still crashes with that error...

Yeah, it would be nice if gearbox addressed this issue

The problem probably is caused by PhysX when it is set to "High".
Try to set it to medium or low and please report if that fixed your problem.

From what i found out, the issue is that Borderlands 2 was coded with 32 Bit in mind so it can only use a limited amount of RAM. So when you mix 4k with max settings it crashes even if your GPU has more RAM. There's something called 4GB patch that might help but i still need to try a long session to see if that helps. If not the only solutions i can see if lowering PhysX or resolution.

Why did this not affect my GTX 1070 then? I also did apply the 4GB patch, but that applies to system RAM and not VRAM. People are saying their game is allocating a max of 3GB of VRAM, but mine crashes at 2.0 GB, which it hovers at the entire time. This sounds like a broken PhysX implementation on RTX cards that they are too lazy to fix.

EDIT:
One idea I have is to use my old GPU as a dedicated PhysX card. If it gives that GPU a separate pool of VRAM that might work, but I have a feeling that may not be the case.

It's worth a try. So far the only thing that has worked for me is lowering my resolution to 1440p.
I played for around 2 hours without crashing like this. For some reason my RTX 2080 uses way more Vram than my friends 1060. It might be the case that RTX use more Vram than they should for these old games. At 1080p he was running at 1400 with max setting yet i was 2400 with the exact same settings.

I got it working with turning PhysX down to medium, it isn't ideal, but it works.

Having the same issue with a 2080, didn't notice this issue until today while playing around Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, it appears that due to the area being big enough the game crashes constantly, using the 4k textures patch doesn't help at all, this needs to be fixed by Gearbox, would be a good idea to let them know through support so it might get patched in the future. :bandit:

Same here on my RTX 2080 Ti. More annoyingly the game likes to freeze completely onto the screen, forcing me to restart my PC. However the last time it crashed I keyboard mashed in frustration, and somehow got it off my screen, and I saw the "ran out of video memory" error.

Only solutions I've seen so far is to either lower PhysX, change to windows 8 compatibility mode, or just deal with it. I'm gonna try going from 4k to 1080p to see if that makes a difference.

Will I be able to have PhysX on high with compatibility mode? That would be a nice work around if I could. I rather like being able to use PhysX on my overpowered machine, but that's if Gearbox is competent, and as the shaders in Halo 1 for PC show us, that is most likely not the case.

Halo? From 2001? Explain your statement in detail.

Can confirm this error even to this day plagues the game. My specs: 1080ti/R7 1700/16GB. Running on 3440x1440, everything maxed except DoF and AO (I'm forcing HBAO via NVinspector)

Found this official support page addressing the issue, it seem theres no solution, only paliatives: https://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/201336073--Ran-Out-of-Video-Memory-Error

EDIT: It seems I solved the issue by using the mod Less Dumb Visuals (https://www.nexusmods.com/borderlands2/mods/196?tab=files). One of the things it does is manually disable all PhysX effects in the game. I also set it to low in the in game options, just in case. So far, so good.
