Axton, Gaige, Krieg, Maya, Salvador and Zer0 are the best characters for solo play.
Farm for Unkempt Harolds, get a good Moxxie slag weapon for health regen. You'll be good for most of the game. Can easily enough farm (mini)bosses to farm gear that can be spread to your other characters. And gradually move into fairly easy raid boss content
2nd Zer0
Can easily get Lyuda rifles from farming the Good, The bad and the Mordecai NPC's to keep your damage output high. Easily go through content. Bore the crap out of Bunker to farm easily there as well as the Frosty the snowman DLC. That is all you need to progress through the entire game.
3rd Maya
Good crowd control and damage with her Phaselock + Ruin. Can try to farm bunker with her pseudo Bore for a ♥♥♥♥♥. Assasinate the Assasin quest gives easy SMG as well. Farm Frosty the snowman for overall gear. However you quite early have to start doing farm runs on the midgets in Wild Life preserve to get all good legendaries and keep on going. So she is bit more gear dependant than the previous two.
4th Krieg
Also not very gear depending, but does require more mechanical understanding of the game to play him well.
The other chars can be done solo as well, but require more work. Drop off eventually and become less fun and more gear depending imo. Gaige starts strong for example, but falls rather flat late TVHM if you don't get her gear up. Axton is....well... Axton.
Salvador and Gaige are a bit more challenging, but they're also far stronger. Salvador typically benefits from auto-fire weapons, like an SMG, but can be used with literally any gun type. He can be built to be tanky, with damage reduction and healing, or as a bullet hose to mow down an army of enemies; it's got a bit of a learning curve, and he's my least favorite, but he's also incredibly powerful. Gaige can technically be built as an elemental sniper, but her most powerful skill benefits from longer play sessions; the longer you play, and stay alive, the more powerful she becomes. If you can manage to get maximum Anarchy stacks with a strong shotgun, you can one-hit just about anything. Or, you can hang back and use her ricochet ability to bounce bullets off the walls towards enemies; it uses more ammo, and does less damage, but it'll keep you alive longer.
Zer0 and Krieg are, arguably, the most fun to play as, but with steep learning curves.
Zer0 can be built as either a sniper or for melee. He also has some profiency with pistols and shotguns, as long as your aim is good. A sniper build Zer0 will alternate between snipers, shotguns and SMGs, depending on your distance; just gotta aim for the head. He's a glass cannon, so he can die very easily, but he's incredibly fun. His melee build puts some emphasis on "keep moving". You can build up stacks of melee buffs, throw kunai to debuff enemies for an 80-300% damage boost against them, and deploy an army of exploding clones while healing off of every backstab.
Krieg is the most fun, but also incredibly frustrating for new players. His early game skills are pretty boring, so it can be frustrating seeing a teammate get all kinds of damage buffs early on, when Krieg only gets more ammo capacity or 10% more health. Once you get about halfway through the story, though, Krieg will begin to shine. His shield will stay down for longer, allowing the full benefit of a certain elemental nova shield, and from melee boosting shields. By around level 16, you'll be able to get some great skills. Whereas other players will be crippled when they run out of health, Krieg can chase people down at top speed while throwing dynamite at them. You can throw an exploding chainsaw around. You can throw an electric grenade out, causing Krieg to burst into flames and get a 50% damage reduction. Krieg's best described as "a train that can't stop". He takes awhile to get going, but he's potentially invincible with the right build late game. He can get up to about a 70% damage reduction, and heal to full health regularly. I HIGHLY recommend you don't play as Krieg your first time through; certain areas of the game will be frustrating if you use his melee build, like in an area that has lots of flying enemies.
so would say one of those for solo play with no multiplay in mind.
edit: i can solo farm the ancient dragons of destruction with these 2 players so only they are worth to mention for me ^^
