if you plan on going for the long haul, play them after TVHM, or you'll be terribly overleveled throughout that...
In each game, you MUST play the main story in order to unlock the next difficulty.
During Normal mode of your first game, I recommend doing all the side quests built into the base game. This will mean you'll be somewhere in the 30 to 35 level range at the end of the main story.
Most DLC's cap out at level 30 in Normal. Tiny Tina and Sir Hammerlock are a bit more robust, those cap out at 35 in Normal.
What I'd recommend is that after you finish Normal, you move on to TVHM. Then, in TVHM, do the main story, but skip the side quests. Instead, do one or two of the big story DLCs to make up for the lost experience.
If you wish to progress on to UVHM, then your goal should be to hit level 50 right at the end of TVHM. Enemies scale with you in UVHM, but your old TVHM weapons do not scale. This means that in Normal in TVHM, being over leveled makes you stronger and makes the content easier. But in UVHM, it means that your weapons are under-leveled, and you're weaker as a result. The solution for this is to try to start UVHM exactly at level 50.
Once you're in UVHM, you can do any and all the DLCs, there's plenty of time to do everything.
My recommended order:
1. Beat the game.
2. Do the Christmas DLC to try and farm for a good class mod.
3. Try to start TVHM around level 30ish.
4. Whenever you get to a part of the game you HATE, start a DLC, which will overlevel you and let you breeze through that part of TVHM.
5. Finish TVHM. If under level 50, consider grinding the Christmas DLC for loot. If at or over 50, start UVHM immediately.
6. Do whatever you want in UVHM. If you want to start Captain Scarlett or Tina's DLC now, you can go right ahead. Just keep in mind you can't reset them (to my knowledge) until you beat the main game in UVHM. So if the DLC's give any gear you want, you may have to restart the story, or hold off on doing them.
If you're playing as Krieg, it's potentially worth starting the Headhunter DLC asap to get the Rough Rider shield, depending on your preferences. In normal mode, the Firehawk, Love Thumper and Deadly Bloom do well enough.
Best time for me has always been mid morning to afternoon for playing them. Not sure if that be be your best time but try different times and see what works best for you. Order was easy to hard as the day progressed.
