There is a special skin you can get if you have Saves from Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2.

This skin is available in Borderlands 2, and should be accessible automatically.

It's called Pandoran Legend (I believe it's called that on all 6 characters).

Here's Axton wearing it: http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Axton/Skins?file=BL2-Axton-Skin-Pandoran_Legend.png

There is also the Special Edition: Fired Up Skin, which should come with the GOTY verions of BL2.

If you have a Borderlands save, you should get them for new ones and that would make them available for the old one as you use the Customization Station for that.

Once you unlock a cosmetic item, it is in the customization station where all of your characters can use it. I think you have to start new character to unlock them though.

If you still have the first BL installed with the save files then you automatically get the skins in your inventory when you play BL2. I forgot whether or not you need to create a new character for this though. If you don't have a copy of BL1, you could always play with a torrented copy and it'll still work (lol being a bad role model here). At least that's what I did. After I played BL1 several years ago, I loved it so much that I immediately bought BL2 when it came out.

They both need to be on the same machine I suspect. You need a Borderlands (original) save file for BL2 to activate the skins.
