It depends on the build and playstyle? Can you post your general build and what you wish to achieve with her?

There are some universal constants, but there are also some useful items for niche uses.

This is too broad of a question.

I'm still level 22, I'm doing the damage build

Do you have a great build to get me through?

Just pick up and play with what you get. Pretty much anything works fine in normal mode.

Use this to show us your build:

I realise that's probably a bit more mid-late game than you're at rn tho ^^

In Normal mode you can use pretty much anything.

Try to use weapons that are close to your level. Even Legendary weapons get old eventually. Also, check your other thread, I posted a link to the Top Gear for Maya there (though that gear is all much more relevant at the level cap).

Try to find a Cat class mod and try some SMGs.

Try to use elemental weapons. Fire for humans and animals. Shock for shielded targets, Corrosive for robots and armored targets. Explosive works fairly well on everything. You can ignore Slag while you're in Normal mode.

Maya is also good with Sniper weapons. Try to find a good Jacobs sniper. Maliwans are good too.

It is not mandatory but can be very beneficial when dealing with badass type enemies and bosses.
You will need slag eventually so getting used to apply it early on isn't a bad idea.

With skills such as "Ruin" and "Scorn" you don't really need to bother getting a slag weapon though.

In NVHM (especially) and TVHM you have many ways to get you "through".

In my opinion you are at a stage at level 22 where whatever build might be suggested will be quickly outgrown. Now is the time to experiment and learn what works best for you and your gear, and to learn how each skill works with the rest and your weapons.

The alternative is to resort to trope builds and gear recipes (Beehawking is one), which can be fine, but this tends to blind you to the many other ways that Maya can be played successfully.

There are some very good resources available on the game's Community guide page or available through a google search.

Alternatively you could post your level 22 build here and ask for input with that as a starting point, along with letting us know what you are using for gear/relics.

Yeah, good point. I tend to ignore it in Normal, and I suppose I should really think about it more.
One of my favorite guns for Maya is the Fibber. Once you get to Eridium Blight, talk to the loader named Mal. He will start you on a quest chain. The third quest in the chain will reward you with the Fibber. There are 3 different barrel options. The ricochet fibber is by far the best if you have points specked into chain reaction although the other two are decent in NVHM.

You also should pick up the Lady Fist when you get as quest reward in Arid Nexus Badlands which is late game.

In NVHM, it doesn't really pay to farm for items as you really don't need legendary gear and you outlevel its usefulness pretty quick. Just keep an eye out for decent green, blue, and purple gear. Also keep an eye out for e-tech SMGs as well as rocket launchers. E-tech shotguns, snipers, and pistols are trash for the most part. Torgue shotguns and assault rifles are useful on some of the enemies on the last run up to the final boss.

You should really have a slag weapon on every character at all times in UVHM and up. I used to run with no slag weapons on my Maya because I was specked into ruin. Found myself in FFYL too many times when the slag wore off and I was doing no damage. Slag weapon and chain reaction slags more enemies faster than ruin ever will. I would use scorn if the cool down were cut in half.

Right, but we're not talking about UVHM at the moment, the OP is still in Normal mode, so... Slag's relevance is more limited.

And yes, I do usually carry some sort of slag weapon, but I find Ruin manages most of my Slag needs most of the time.
