There is one way, and one way only to do it legit: Play the game. You can, depending on your skill and knowledge about the game, absolutely take "shortcuts" - but they are not all that short and amount to, well playing certain quests and knowing when to do what in order to maximize your playthrough level up wise.
And then again, there are also those let's call them hard caps per playthrough - it is unbeneficial to "level super fast" because then you have a whole new set of issues, not least that you never get gear at your level and everything is too easy until you get to the 3rd mode were world levels are relative to yours (nearly exactly your level).
But whatever you decide, do NOT level over 50 before entering the 3rd playthrough - because that would be awkward.
Say you are level 53 then. But you have ideally level 50 gear, if even that (since 50 is the "hard cap" for the 2nd playthrough). So now you face the insane level 53 enemies with level 50 or less gear - making the whole thing unbearable for most players. And yes those 3 levels are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ noticeable in UVHM.
The golden chest helps out in that case, but it's usefulness is debatable in the long run and is sort of a convienient "not garbage" solution for overleveling - not ideal, is the point.
I guess you could maximize the XP-gained-per-time-unit-spent by grinding out bosses or doing stuff like the Bar Brawl but it still takes a while, especially in UVHM when you need to gear up every now and then to be efficient at it and you still need to play through the game if you want to get anywhere.
1) Arid Nexus - Badlands: huge xp pinata (rabids/tubbies, Bonehead, Saturn & SBA constructor)
2) Cleaning Pete's bar over and over (T3 Rematch) - it's also fastest way to get torgue tokens
3) Mutaded varkids from Mighty Morphin' side quest - just don't pick varkid samples
Grinding out XP is even more repetetive than playing the game normally and in the end all there's left to do is is grinding.
Mix in different DLC & sidequests throughout your various playthroughs for more variety and don't use the same items over and over again to make it a different experience everytime.
If you get bored by the game you can also just stop playing it for a while so it feels fresh again once you return, you know.
OK, but really, the only answer I know for legit play is just get busy killing things and doing missions. Maybe hit the farm-able bosses as you go.
Saturn farm (the bee and pimp is prefered)
badass bar > get high absorb shield (sham is not needed l2p) and pray that u find a topneaa and fire at two certain walls 59-72 takes like 2 hours max.
varkid morph with the quest from hammerlock.
I always prefer the saturn farm cuz of chance of tubbies after 62. - 59-72 takes around 112 runs.
