If it is something rare or really good you might want to keep it though.
I have a couple of storage characters whose entire purpose is to store pearlescent weapons I have found. I simply refuse to sell pearlescents. I hate selling most legendaries. WTF's, Bunnies and other less than useful legendaries etc are fair game to be sold, but mostly they get kept, or given to friends, or if they are really bad versions of stuff I have already, left on the ground. (Tubby drop class mods spring to mind here)
An empty storage character is useful for temporarily storing most of your gear while you go and farm someone like Hyperius for example. Lots of room for new gear, especially for something like the Evolution where there is a lot of variation. Grab them all and sort through for good ones later.
You could create storage mules by copying an existing save file and renaming it, but my preferred method is to start new characters, get them to Sanctuary, leave them something expensive to sell in Claptrap's stash and then hit the slots in Moxxi's for eridium. Then there will be visits to the Winged Storm to pick up more eridium from a bunch of dead dragons. I have reciprocal arrangements with a friend. Dragons get killed, new character is invited to join the game and loot the place. For new storage and playable characters this is a very good way of getting that character up to speed regarding upgrades.
The second advantage with creating new characters is that they will be able to add to the BAR pool. Gun runner, Wholesale, the various colour challenges from all the guns from the slot machines, Deal of the Day etc. It all adds up.
I am a packrat about collecting gear - all pearls, seraphs, legendaries, uniques etc. Got them all. I am now doing head / skin collecting. BNK-3R, Dukino's Mom, Henry, Geary, Saturn, Son of Mothrakk, Captain / Sparky Flynt, Terra.... Not complete yet. Son of Mothrakk and Vermi being really annoying pains to farm.
Even if you are not a gun collector, having spare storage characters can be useful.
