because it's really hard for me to get the projectiles to split into 3

Learn how to use it. The Lead Storm is simply a Rain of Death. It has a working range, but not useful close up.
Think about how a firehose works in real life - the fireman aims up, the water stream arcs and lands a distance away.
With a Bee shield, this causes damage x3. Each split bullet gets full amp damage.
