Fuel efficiency
Been confused a bit on the different available figures.

Which speed can be considered "cruise/economy" when running on the diesel engine?
I have a bad tendency of slapping it into max speed + engineer bonus.

forward 2 is the economy speed

Thanks!

If you select a speed, then hover over the fuel icon at the top, it'll give an estimate of KM left. Speed 1 reflects at the most economical, albeit the slowest at 5km/hr.

Yeah I was checking those but it felt like it made no sense that the slower I was the more efficient. Cause forward 1 is just excruciating.

forward 2 makes a bit more sense i guess.

I agree, speed 2 is the most economic when it comes to my personal time + diesel usage / patience.

Oh so forward 1 IS the most fuel efficient.

Hrm. This seem weird based on my knowledge of combustion engines... normally your efficiency peaks at a point that is neither the slowest possible speed, nor the fastest. But I don't know much about how boats, water and inertia change that.

Oh right I'm a dumbo, it's consumption/speed. I'm gonna have to check those.

In Silent Hunter the speed settings are named as follows

1 Ahead Slow
2 Ahead 1/3 (economy)
3 Ahead Standard
4 Ahead Full
5 Ahead Flank

Hope that helps :)

My math is basically non-existant but I don't belive speed 1 is the most economical speed because there's more to it than fuel consumption, ETA to target and speed vs fuel consumption, something like that. Unless I'm wrong and it just depends on how long you want to wait to go from point A to point B.

afaik:

the normal cruise speed was "Langsame Fahrt" (2nd speed) the boats of type VIIC where meant to travel at this speed, to theire operation. Speed laid between ca. 8 -12knts

Also you can do 2 things to increase fuel efficiency:

- Have an officer assigned to navigation. Have 2 crew members assigned to assist this officer.
- Have an officer assigned to whichever engine you're running. Have 2 crew members assist this officer.

Efficiency gains are lower when running Electric.

I Usually use Ahead 1/3 to get places, and that saves me fuel to get into good firing position ect

Forward 2 + Chief Engineer with 2 sailors + Leader on Navigation desk with 2 sailors + submerge from time to time to save up fuel = you can almost circumnavigate the globe.

Remember, as you're traveling you consume both fuel and food. Speed 1 might be the speed that consumes the least fuel, but by the time you finish the patrol mission at that speed your crew will have probably eaten a lot.

all time full speed, when battery is full switch to electric engine... if u go slower u end up with no more food, also food is much more expensive than fuel

Actually I think using electronic engine the most time and max speed, you can reach 19 km/h, that's enough for chasing most ships, when battery below 75%, switch to diesel and recharge it to full, you can travel a very long range.

I just spend below 100 after finish mission.
