I have played the game for the first time yesterday and the reference where devs made jokes about their game in their game I didin't cared for that much, especially not in the beginning of the game where the game still has to create an immersion and atmosphere. I really don't care if the devs have been sued and stuff so I don't know why they are telling me about it in their game except for their own ego's. Other than that the game has been fun so far and I enjoy it a lot.
Imagine if instead of the heavy-handed DBZ aping in the first chapter, you instead had our resident Dark Elf revelling in their newfound abilities while the npcs commented on her seemingly unfathomable level of power - and then maybe the possibly-genre-astute Evil notices her attack power is over 9000. That would have warranted a sinister giggle.
edit:
Ironically, the Devs are more likely to be sued over the overt DBZ and Warcraft references than anything Dungeon Keeper-ery. Who even holds the rights to DK these days?
Were you seriously expecting high drama from a game like this?
FYI the funniest bit I've come across so far is absolutely the cutscene where they talk about the heroes hiding behind walls and they just keep stacking ♥♥♥♥ in front of that wall. I love tacky visual humour.
Oh and summoning bears. Evil bears. The narrator is a bellend DM.
This game is silly in its humor, sure, but it's so well done in comparison that in this case it's just a matter of you not liking it due to personal preference.
Futuaris nisi irrisus ridebis.
I'm afraid I have to disagree. The game wouldn't be nearly as good. This would be one of those discussions where we'll have to agree to disagree on the point.
But, in the interest of sharing knowledge: You do realize you can dial the narrator back in the options, right?
No they are not, because every time Dungeon 3 references or overtly copies stuff from other games, it's done in a parody fashion. And there are very strong laws to protect parody.
It's the same exact reason why people like Weird Al Yankovic are legally able to parody any song they want to, and even use the exact same music as in the real original song, and legally speaking, the parodists don't need the owner of the original song's permission to do that. Weird Al in particular does happen to ask for permission anyway, but legally, he doesn't need to.
And many other parody song writers don't ask for permission, and they can't get sued.
The same laws also apply to TV, films, video games, etc. It's also the same reason politicians can't sue comedians on SNL for disparaging them, which could be done if they didn't have the parody protection (in which cases the comedians would be open to lawsuits against them for slander or libel or defamation).
It's also the same reason why the Game of Thrones creators did nothing but bark when Trump used their font to publish this poster:

They complained to the media about how Trump has to stop using their IP, but that was just hot air meant to mislead the public. Because they knew full-well that the image was protected under parody law, and therefore they couldn't actually do anything about it at all, legally speaking...which is exactly why they never even tried to. If they actually had any power to do anything about it legally, then they would have filed a lawsuit about it.
