why the crown is British and not Spanish?
since Tropico is a spanish speaking country, shouldn't it be a former Spanish colony and not a British one?

Tropico IS a Spanish colony. The kind-but-snobby ambassador that advises you in the Colonial Era is an Englishman.

"The Crown has characteristics of both the Spanish and British Empire. On one hand, there is the spanish cultural heritage, the mixed spanish-moorish architecture of the Palace and the accents of both the small folk and the Dynastic Family, and on the other hand, there's Lord Oaksworth, the use of 'His Majesty', and the red Royal Colonial Infantry."

"His Majesty" is a common title for a king. Did the Spanish Crown use something else?

Yes, "Su Majestad", but my impression is that Tropico is a British colony (Lord Oaksworth is a British name, with English looks, the west indies company, etc)

That is an excellent point. Might explain why the Tropicans are speaking English in Tropico 5 instead of Spanish. It's also pretty weird when you have Spanish words in some of the buildings, which creates some inconsistencies if Tropico was a British colony.

What if Tropico WAS a Sapanish colony, but England defeated Spain in a war and seized it in the peace treaty?

That has actually happened several times in RL. In addition, that explains the bilingualism, Spanish architecture, AND the English Crown!

not in the Spanish version of the game, although some accents are Spanish (from Spain and not Latin America)

It happened much earlier when many Caribean islands changed hands to the Bristish, but now they are English speaking countries and people are descendants from the slaves the British brought in.

The other case is the Spanish colonies seized by the US (Cuba, puerto rico) in the XIX century, much later than the smaller antilles, and they keep the Spanish speaking population

Don't forget my favorite: "El Cigarro Grande".

It's clearly one of the inconsistencies of the Tropico saga, since it's considered a Spanish colony in everything (names, language, architecture) even the "pirate ship" of the pirate cove carries one of the historical flags of Spain (the flag of Castile with which Christopher Columbus carried when he discovered America) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1740217566
although actually in the period of the game (around 1800) it should have carried the current flag of Spain.

However, the advisor is English, and when you achieve independence by arms, he tells that you will be part of the Commonwealth, which without saying it, is clearly English.

Look up the history of Trinidad and Tobago. It started out claimed by the Spanish, but was first colonized by the Dutch and of all people Latvians. The Spanish took it back in the late 1600's. Then the British took it over during the Napoleonic wars and they were combined into the colony of Trinidad and Tobago in 1889. Which roughly corresponds to the time frame in the game.

Yeah, I know the cases you mention. In fact, there are many islands that were Spanish and ended up being owned by other nations such as France, the United Kingdom, the United States or the Netherlands.

But except Puerto Rico (USA) most of the islands that were Spanish, and ended up being owned by other great powers of the time, suffering a process of removing Spanish elements (such as language, or names for example) however, it should be remembered that in Tropico, the name of the "dictator" is "The President" "El Presidente" in Spanish. Without forgetting what I said about the flag of the Kingdom of Castile as a pirate flag (which is curious) Not to mention that Tropico is a huge wink to Cuba.

What really happens is that Spain was the greatest colonial power of its time and the Caribbean was called "the Spanish Sea", however that was a long time ago, and today it has more commercial interest to refer to Anglo-Saxon culture than to Spanish culture (or any type of culture) especially in film, television, or as in this case, in video games.

;)

Why not Dutch or French?

I think you're reading too much into it.

Yes, in fact there were many small islands that were taken by the British or French, but as you said, all spanish elements were eliminated. But the case of Tropico is that it is a typical spanish speaking banana republic, with architectonic and cultural features very similar to that of Cuba, Dominican republic, or even centroamerican countries. Therefore, it should gain independence from Spain (there were 2 waves of independence from Spain: in 1815 and 1898, 1898 could be the case for Tropico)
