To be fair, Clash Royale is very similar to the WC3 map Castle Fight, only with a card-game mechanic and the game being smaller-scale with less reliance on buildings. Castle Fight was one of my favorite games, and I was excited to play Clash Royale when it came out, but the daily grind to open chests was a bit annoying. More importantly I hated losing a game not by being outplayed but because the opponent's Minions or Arrows spells were higher level and thus they had a P2W advantage. In this game there are simply legendaries I don't have yet, but they don't seem broken, and eventually I will have them if I play enough. I could still be playing Clash Royale to this day and I still wouldn't have maxed any of the legendary cards.
The reality is the best cards in the game are actually the most common cards whereas the most expensive cards to craft are actually the most expensive to cast. So if you look at the higher ranks you'll see them using a lot of the basic cards and maybe 1-2 of the more expensive legendary cards as a finisher. The "masters" actually make this even less of a Pay2W because unlike in Clash Royale where everybody is scrambling to get their cards leveled up in this game you can just utilize bridge control and your master to win the game. Right now I'm having lots of fun playing an extremely defensive deck and relying on the Stormcaster Master and his global range to just ping the opponent to death LOL
With that said, P2W or not, I wish it didn't take so long to get cards.
Actually, since both are inspired heavily by the original custom games on wc3 / sc, you can always played this type of game before. This game is not unique and neither is crash royal.
The core concept for Minion Master first came up in the office when we were working on Forced Showdown (bring CCG into an action roguelike) and some devs had an office LAN where they played a bunch of Desert Strike and Nexus Wars. BaboonLord was amazed that the genre had never been brought to any big standalone games, and suggested a CCG element could add a lot to it.
Couple months later, we ran into the Card Shuffle map for Starcraft 2 and that became a useful source of inspiration as we let the ideas brew. Shortly after we'd finally committed to that idea for our next project, we learned that a huge developer with a massive following was about to hit open beta with a similar project (Clash Royale) - and that they were both ahead of us in their development and already hitting 100k views on their youtube videos.
In the end their game was great as another inspiration source, and we soon decided that there was plenty of room on PC for something a bit deeper and way less pay to win.
We've recently seen TotalBiscuit selling people on Minion Masters as "Clash Royale, without all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥", which I guess is another way to put it. =P
In fact, After i play this i am inspired to make a sc2 map that is similar to this game in style, but not exactly the same - I want it to be 3v3 - but we'll have to see. 3v3 with 3 lanes - bonus points for mid? Hmm, the ideas are endless. Very coolt hough because the sc2 / wc3 map community has lots of GREAT ideas that are not made into real games. I would love to see you guys continue to bring them to life!
