The way the game is designed, Swadia is right smack-dab in the middle of the map. Everyone sees them, everyone meets King Harlaus, etc. Since only about 1.3% of the people on Steam who have this game (see global achievements) have ever finished it to the end, we have hordes of players who know little else about the game.
Then there was a video that was put up on the internet some time ago. It was a pretty funny joke video made up of in-game footage, mixed with artistic embellishments (like a treasure hoard of butter in King Harlaus' vault). The basic theme of the "joke" is that Harlaus is a loser who hoards butter and would rather sit around admiring his stash of dairy products than be a King.
On top of that, you add nearly a decade of brainless arguments about which faction is "best".
In the end, what we get are an army of fools who think memes are cool, droning on and on about how much they hate King Harlaus, without realizing that they are playing a complex and wonderful game where each and every King is a scumbag and a loser.
The part that irks me is that it's stupid and totally misses the point. It's embraced and popularized by people who know the least about the game. It's just a very distinct example of human beings getting behind a falsehood because they think being a part of a group will increase their social standing or lend them an air of authority...or something?
Perhaps seeing this play out in the real world, given the state of current events, wears my patience thin? Current events being what they are, I think the last thing anyone needs are more people wearing novelty ball-caps and waving flags.
That is what I figured as well, at least for the start. It kind of merged with the pre-existing Fat Harlus jokes.
The joke is that Harlaus has to feast a lot due to villages constantly raided and lords being salty about that, due to swadia's geographical position. Add in the floris butter-bug and you get the meme about fat butterlord Harlaus.
It's a meme, not some political or social statement. Don't like it, ignore it.
It's like getting upset at people who ride skateboards instead of walking like normal people.
Warband is not a country club, all types play the game. Casual and hardcore alike.
Honestly White Knight, reading WAY to much into this.
I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was in the ♥♥♥♥ posting trenches, a pepe to my right got his head blown off and permanently removed from Twitter. I grabbed my Facebook and fired off a Hillary "suicide she wrote" meme and a black guy pointing at his head meme and got the hell outta there. Still regret leaving behind my platoon, but it's the only way I'm here today.
The saddest part is two years later I got offed by Facebook for posting a Stephen hawking at the bottom of the stairway to heaven meme with him thinking "... ♥♥♥♥". Not even a war casualty.
But at least I didn't commit suicide by two bullets to the back of the head like many others...
Nice.
You get too much into it here, man. Everyone who truly appreacitates meme-culture can enjoy the butter-memes. There are some people who have spent a TON of hours (to be exactly, two tons) like me and who haven't got the "Conquer Calradia"-Achievement. (If that is what you are referring to).
The meme originally was spawned from a bug (to be exactly, most common in the Floris mod, sometimes in Native) where whole swadian villages were filled with Butter when looted, nothing else, just butter. Combined with the fact that King Harlaus prefers to stay with his giant army in Praven to hold feasts instead of defending his kingdom, the Meme of the "Butter-Party-King" was born.
Godspeed, soldier
That being said, the Butter Meme is simply explained - Why not Butter?
(Or, due to a historic laughable bug that caused all loot from raided villages to be Butter... because, butter.)
