1. The Banner Saga.
2. The Banner Saga 2.
3. The Banner Saga 3.
My favourite by far is the first one. BS2 is also a worthy successor. I like BS3 but I'm really disappointed with the lack of epilogues and conclusions for our characters.
It doesn't even need to be nothing fancy, just some slides of our heroes in order to get a sense of closure. The ending felt way too rushed (as If they ran out of time or resources) and it's not a good decision to lock Arberrang content (conversations with heroes, encounters, closure for Rugga...) for players who have made good choices and thus they don't need to go back to Arberrang several times.
I hope that they consider adding some slides to the ending or finding a better way to deal with the final Arberrang content in the future, because despite these flaws and some bugs, it's still a great game.
2, 1, 3
Storywise i can only put them on 1,2,3 because that is how it goes.
For the caravan mechanics, 2 did it best, with the clansmen giving you supplies to cover your warriors and the training challenges in camp.
The wave battles in 3 made it the only time I genuinely wanted to keep fighting after winning one, so 3 is best in terms of combat structure.
3 also gave the best sense of tension during chapter 21 (in a series where there is always tension), and it's the only one where I felt like I was genuinely making the world a better place, bringing all four peoples under one banner.
On the other hand, 1 stuck the ending the best. The funeral scene set to that beautiful swell of music... the other two endings don't compare. The ending in 2 was weakest, but that's largely by virtue of "part 2 of a trilogy" always having the weakest endings. 3, obviously, varied depending on how it ends, but the lack of any real epilogue hurt it.
I don't know if I could rank the three against each other on an overall scale; they all excelled at something.
2. BS2
3. BS3
They've all got their strong and weak points. BS3 is the only one to disapoint me story wise though. I'm mainly disapointed the ending is so abrupt, I'd kind of hoped and expected more. Also disapointed you apparently miss quite a bit of content in Arberrang if you don't do terribly, the devs could've done that a bit better. Rook/Alette were the people and side I was more invested in but feel that kinda was weaker due to been in one location and I've missed scenes there.
TBS1 - make the right decisions to keep everyone alive
TBS2 - make the right decisions to keep anyone alive
TBS3 - ♥♥♥♥ this, i just hope i still have anyone left in the end.
Hehe, yeah that pretty much how every first playthrough goes.
Combatwise: S2 => S1 > S3.
Saga1 battles were repetitive at times, but I liked the raw simplicity of them, little-to-no randomness, no overlapping features, a great (albeit difficult) boss fight etc.
The story and all the mystery was also fantastic, in Saga1. I guess first part of Trilogies are generally my favs.
2 - 1 - 3
I place 2nd as the best and my favorite because over all it is the most fun experience. You feel like you are a true caravan leader going throught a great adventure and your decisions feel trully rewarding instead of just being miserable all the time. The gameplay it's fun, simple and introduces some interesting build options which can be exploited for fun times.
The missions are different, fun and enjoyable and dont feel tedious like some are from TBS1. It also lets you play as some of the most fun characters like Bolverk and the horseborn. It also has a lot of stuff that you can investigate through your journey without getting punished... when it makes sense and when it does not that is. It also let you rommance which is nice. It has fantastic pacing and the endings are nice.
TBS1 its beutiful to look at but you can tell that Stoic learned a lot from making this one and thus why TBS2 feels so improved and inviting, its more fun and has better writting. TBS1 It´s hardcore and has no mercy. The journey and the world it´s beautiful but you really feel like you are scratching stones. Your decisions really matter here and it has by far the most emotional and pretty ending of the 3.
TBS3 is a conclusion... that feels extremely underwhelming. I was expecting things to be very climatic with how tb2 ´ both possible endings ´ But leaves A LOT to wish for. I even ended up wishing a cliche happy ending but in the age we live god forbid it, everything needs to be edgy now.
Anyways they introduced the Title´s system which is pretty underwhelming ´Í suppose you may be able to make some characters into real OP bastards´´ but it doesnt feel like something you may exploit in your first run as you need time to plan your characters on how they will benefit the most with those perks.
The battles are not as tedious as tbs1 but some of them feel kind of tedious.
Also the pacing of the story feels a bit wierd IMO.
Finally the endings are incredibly underwhelming, I was expecting something more emotional and powerful. Some more illustrations or perhap animations. I dunno, I just felt like... this is it? For real?
I mean seriously look at TBS1 the ending its the most simple thing ever and it is sad, beautiful and somewhat gives you hope for a miracle to happen. TBS2 has animation and a promising conclusion.
If I ever become rich and Don Bluth is still alive, I´ll comission him a short for the ending. srly.
Not that i'm THAT disappointed in 3 or how everything wraps up but it definitely suffers for the way it's just sprinting towards a conclusion. It also didn't quite seem to know how to handle providing compelling decision making to you now that you have reached your desintation as opposed to constantly travelling for it.
The structure of Chapter 21 also actively punishes you if you have done really well which was also a huge bummer.
Explain plz, it did felt forced and rushed. Like it didnt know what it wanted to do but just wanted to rush and get it done.
I was expecting my choices or some choices to reflect on the ending like rommance between rook and odd, the new dredge friend. Bellower returning - check out the secret ending of tbs2 - would had been great if we could have had Alette back, ripped from the fabric of the tappestry a la God Of War 2. I mean it´s a fairy tale so what´s wrong with the happy endings?
The lack of epilogue is quite dissatisfying.
If you've done really well and have too many days then unless you waste a lot of time intentionally you don't have the back and forth in that chapter and just skip alll of that story and characterization.
Difficulty
2,1,3 I felt like I lost at least 50% of the battles in 2. I barely won all of them in 1 (mostly because I went in blind and learned the strategy way too late lol) and in the 3rd I steam roll every enemy. I just beat my first Sundr and a bit more.
Story wise it's
1
2
3
They just can't beat the amazingly strong start. It was beautiful and drew out all the feels.
The second was was similar but I didn't love the characters as much.
The third one so far isn't bad but it really depends how the rest goes if it surpasses 2. From what I've read, it won't.
