Prey

how creepy is prey?
im looking into getting prey, but the only thing stopping me is: is it scary? ive heard that after a bit its no longer scary, but i just want to be sure before i get it. like, do you need to slip past enemies, or else they will kill you? or can you just rush in? thanks for the help.

Hi there. I wouldn't say it's scary but more like claustrophobic, in the sense that you are always on your toes, not knowing where the attack will come from. Mimics changing into everyday objects like chairs and coffee mugs can lead to some jumpscare. Not to mention the phantoms, that can teleport, toying with you like a cat with a mouse.
At first, you'll need to slip past enemies because they do a -lot- of damage. Or you can use your surroundings to your advantage in a fight. It's a fps game, but you have to plan your fights carefully (so, not a call of duty kind of game).
You'll be able to rush in when you get some powers and weapons upgrades, that's where it'll be no longer scary. Or at least, not as much, you'll still feel the need to be cautious. That's the take of a guy who likes to duck 90% of the time and set up traps.

Imagine something like a game where you can usually spot enemies from a safe distance, and your reaction will be "okay, it I get too close, this thing can kill me if I fail to sneak around, or I can spend a good portion of my resources to just kill it". Less of a scare and more of an "okay, how do i get around this problem?". Of course, there will be enemy types you need to get rid of, if for nothing else, then because they are camping in the only doorway you can go through or guarding the next mandatory quest item.

Even though mimics are your main source of jumpscares, the game also actively tries to induce fear/panic on the player by other "artificial" means. For instance, spooky looking areas are accompanied by spooky sounding music. On a more blatant way, there is a particular typhon alien which has the bad habit of living in particularly scary places (no light sources/flickering lights). Whenever he spots you the game plays a track that is clearly designed to scare you. So here is the tick box for this game:

Unscriptted jumpscares - YES
Scriptted jumpscares - YES (few and far between)
Scary environments (morgue, science labs...) - YES
Dark/dim environments - YES
Scary looking monsters - YES/NO (you may think typhons look silly or even cute)
Paranoia - ABSOLUTELY
Loud noises and fear inducing tracks - ABSOLUTELY

I don't know how sensitive you are to those kinds of things but if you are and you want to avoid being scared altogether Prey is definitely not for you.

If you are not, however, then Prey is worth it even at full price.

It's not scary at all and this comes from someone who is scared as ♥♥♥♥ of Horror games, the only times you will get scared is when a mimic appears out of nowhere and jumpscares you, but that's all
It will happen just when you dont expect it, wich will be like... In 5% of the game

The rest of the time you are just going to be hitting every prop with your bench, zapping robots and avoiding the bigger mobs until you can actually kill them

very well said XD I love this game and all those yes and absolutely's xD but it freaks me out, I can't hardly play more than 1-2h haha. For me it's mostly the noises, and specially the voices from the phantoms, you hear em from far, I think they say "closer, closer, closer" or something and it freaks me out.

the medkit station has creepiest voice ever xd

It's scary in the same way Bioshock is scary. Maybe some stuff will creep you out on your first time but you'll get used to the game.

I personally get scared by full-blown horror games very easily but PREY is fine for me.

like 300 times scarier than a Bioshock.

Space Station where experiments gone wrong, and (most of) all survivors are dead, with aliens having escaped and infested the station, being able to decoy as anything in the environment.

Bioshock 2, you are a big daddy, a huge thing that was 1st game's "scary element". Despite being chased by big sister, its not any scary at all. Splicers are your victims, just that. Bioshock infinite, everything is uber colourful, happy, not a single scary music or tense moment, except for the thing that occasionaly chases you.

Bioshock 1, the "scariest" of 3, its only lil bit scary at the beginning, with the elevator opening etc. You play a little bit and you are wishing to meet splicers and big daddies so you can toy with them and your powers XD.

Bioshock 1:

Unscriptted jumpscares - no, unless you count little ambushes as jumpscares.
Scriptted jumpscares - maybe one or two?
Scary environments (morgue, science labs...) - no, maybe a liiiitle bit, sometimes
Dark/dim environments - yes
Scary looking monsters - no, big daddies can be a lil bit scary encounter depending on your life / ammo etc, but they are not scary themselves
Paranoia - lol, no
Loud noises and fear inducing tracks - sometimes, but without much effect as you know theres no scary monster

Neither Bioshock or Prey are scary at all

You dont give a ♥♥♥♥ about big daddies as soon as you learn they dont give a shir about you and that you can actually kill them
Neither you do about Prey's ghosts since you can literally just walk behind one with a shotgun and BANG, half it's health gone finish it while on the ground
And in regards to mimics, just hit everything, if something is a mimic just hit it again

It's impossible to be scared in a game in wich half your inventory are guns, the other one is ammo and you have powers wich can one shot your enemies

what are you, 12 years old? trying to impress anybody? xDDD
its just my and others opinion, agreeing that is creepy, so we dont give a flying ♥♥♥ about what you say we must feel or think.
♥♥♥♥♥♥ price awarded when you talk about shotgun, ignoring that depending on how you play, you are 5-10h without your macho men shotgun.

only a kid or a very inmature adult would try to deny others opinions like you, as if the world revolved around you.

well timmy, go tell your mummy how macho you are, maybe you are rewarded with an extra dessert hahahaha. capullo

Whatever you say dude, if you are SCARED of coffee mugs it's on you I guess, never play Amnesia you might actually turn crazy

Btw, 5-10 hours without a shotgun?

YOU LITERALLY CAN GET ONE IN THE FIRST HOUR OF PLAYING
DO YOU KNOW WHAT EXPLORATION IS?

"Oh, a closed door, guess there is ABOSULETY NO WAY of entering this room, let's follow the main objective arrow LOL"

Btw, you are EXTREMELY salty if you seriously felt the need to go to my profile and post some lame ass comment to "prove" your point
Even tho I said in my original comment in this discussion that I'm scared as ♥♥♥♥ of horror games, wich Prey just isnt :steamsalty::steamsalty::steamsalty::steamsalty::steamsalty::steamsalty:

EDIT: AHAHAHAHAHAHA YOU DELETED IT WHAT A DUMDBASS AHAHAHAHAHAHA, YOU CANT EVEN STAND FOR WHAT YOU SAY

Aside from the first couple of times a Mimic jumps you - which you get used to - I can only recall one really spooky moment. Deep in the game you open one of the medical operator's rooms and there's a dead guy leaning against the doors, and he proceeds to fall right at your feet.

I kneejerk shoot that SOB every freaking time I play, even though he's dead.

Yeah, that one was actually very unexpected, the game needed more little tricks like that
