Sims 3, don't buy it on Steam if you like mods
/rant

I've played Sims 3 for a while, but only bought it on Steam recently. It was obviously a waste of my time and money, as only the base game gets updated to latest version so far (I have Nightlife as well, which seems to be 3 patches behind, with no way to update it seems). This wouldn't be a problem for the casual gamer I suppose, but I use mods heavily (core mods such as awesomemod), that depend on version numbers being correct.

So if you are someone who likes to mod their games, don't bother. You'll do better getting the retail version, or if you're extra pissed off, a cracked version somewhere from the depths of the internet.

I seriously hope Steam will resolve this issue soon. There is no excuse. The patches are out there. There is no logical reason they shouldn't be getting updated on Steam.

Yeah I have to agree with raven, the sims website says I need upgrades. But the sims 3 launcher will not update, thru the steam version of the launcher. And I know that certain expansions I have are not up to date with the EA versions.

Same here. I thought it was just me.

does there change anything with the patches ? :o

I guess its EA not giving Steam the updates to put up, odd as Sims3 uses a seperate launcher

am sure there will be a way to patch it o.o you could probably find a manual patch download to it. i'll find out when i get more dlc but i dont see how dlc would affect mods not working if they go on sale on 6th which am hoping i'll tell you what i find since am hooked to it

As of Patch 1.24, EA designed it so the base game is the only one that needs to be patched. If the Launcher is saying you have the latest version then the base game/expansions/stuff pack is all up to date.

Anyways modders are listing only the base game version in their releases.

That's odd Haruhi, as my version of the base game is up-to-date, but my version of Nightlife is 6.1.13, while I see that the latest version out there is 6.5.1. There is OBVIOUSLY something wrong there, as any core mod will pick up on this and NOT WORK properly. That is not the modders fault, that is the fault of the way EA designed it and the way Steam completely fails to update it properly.

So you are wrong, I do not have the latest updated version of the game (Nightlife), so updated core mods will not work properly. The version number should be the same as the latest one out there. This shouldn't be difficult to understand, really.

Felixia, mods that are not core mods will most of the time work despite the wrong versioning. There is no way that I have found to manually update the game, because of the way Steam works. So there is no solution as of yet.

Then manually download the Super Patch file from EA. Go on modthesims.info and search through their Help section for the super patch link.

In a worst-case-scenario, you should be able to take the keys from Steam and register them on Origin down the line to be able to play the game there instead.

The fact that you can't do the reverse (go from Origin to Steam) was among the more compelling reasons to buy here...

Kira - no I've tried. It doesn't work. It works for the retail versions, and probably the origin versions. Because of how the folder structure works on Steam (I suppose that's the reason) and the fact that you can only update the game through Steam, makes it impossible (so far) to manually update the game. The modthesims site is structured around the retail versions. Not the Steam versions.

I've considered going through Origin to do this, but I care too little to go through with it. And yeah, same here, I went for Steam for the same reasons. It's always been more convenient than other digital downloads, and much more convenient than a retail version. Now I'm not so sure it's worth it at all.

If you found the Helper Monkey Tool don't bother with it since it only knows about the retail structure. The help page for .package files even warns about it not using it anymore and tells you to use the Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 folder.

The sims 3 on steam is not compatable with retail copies so the missing updates makes sense I dont think its a steam issue more of an EA issue. EA does everything through their own digital distributer IE Origins and they are limiting updates, content, even the Sims store to people who either buy it on origin or in stores. EA while allowing steam to sell the base content control their product and who gets what content they make you register your retail version on their site so you can recieve updates and so forth the fact that you can't do that when you purchase it on steam should tell you something. Steam may have the sims very cheap ,but EA is dead set on making you pay one way or another. I did debated on getting it here as well ,but from what I have discovered/read/ researched if you want to enjoy Sims completely without missing anything and without these issues you have no choice but to purchase it through EA or buy the retail version and register it. The only way steam is going to be allowed to be 100% compatable with the retail version or steam register codes in the retail version is if Origin crashes and burns forcing EA to release their grip and cave in. While I hope that happens I dont see it happening anytime soon.

So in short welcome to the world of EA! voted the worst company of all time (they even beat out walmart) EA's motto is "whatever, you'll buy it, FU"

Haruhi, the monkey tool has nothing to do with the manual updates, and even so, I don't use it. I know what I'm doing here.

FantasyTiger: yeah I'm not really surprised with all that :P And where can you vote for worst company? :D
