The Sims™ 3

I can't play my game, I keep getting an error.
I have a lot of DLCs and haven't been able to play in ages. I would love to play again, I got everything on Steam. And, no, EA, I am not going to get this game and re-purchase everything. What could I do to play again?

What version of Windows are you using?

Windows 10.

What error are you getting? What does it say?

Also, what Expansion Packs do you have?

Do you have any mods installed?

Here are some notes I've collected from older threads on the topic of the game not starting. Maybe something in here will help:

Sims3 - Game Won't Start

From another thread:

  1. Press the Windows key + e which should open File Explorer.
  2. Open "Documents"
  3. Open "Electronic Arts"
  4. There you should find a folder named "The Sims 3". Change it's name to something else - such as "Old The Sims 3".
  5. See if the game will start up.

If it does, you know that the problem is in your old user files - something corrupt, a bad mod, bad custom content, something.

And here's an odd fix posted by someone:

I seem to have fixed the problem (although there may still be errors or bugs further on in the game). I am now able to run the game. The solution was to go to the game file under Program Files > Steam > steam > games. There I saw the Sims 3 Icon with a weird looking numerical name. I changed the name to The Sims 3 and now the game is running.

Comment from someone who got an error message, saying to check the logs, when trying to start the game:

So, i've had this Error aswell and found a way to fix it on my own terms. I just want to provide help to those, who also have this issue.

I was looking into the registry of my Sims:
You type in REGEDIT into the Searchbar and a new window opens. You have to go to the following path:
HKEY_LOCA_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\ Sims(Steam)

In there i checked every DLC i just bought with the collection and found, that the Katy Perry DLC hat a completetly different installation path as all the other DLCs, so i simply removed it and that fixed the problem. Though i cannot tell you how to fix it otherwise than removing it. You can probably re-install it at a different location.

Also, you can go into the game files and try launching the game using the TS3W.exe file. Doing this will bypass Steam and the EA launcher. (TS3.exe is for the EA version of the game. TS3W.exe is for the Steam version of the game.)

First off, I don't know what the error is. it stops the game as soon as I hit the OK button, and doesn't tell me where the logs which the error is in is located.

Secondly, I got another version of TS 3, but then the EA guy said I had to re-purchase all of my DLCs. That isn't happening, I have 20 of them.

Lastly... I think I've seen these threads. I could try the exe launcher, but isn't that in my Steam folder?

So I had the same problem for about two years. I was getting frustrated, I cried, I screamed and I yelled. Then I found some youtube video and I tried that, and it started up about halfway, and then crashed again.

Then I found OUT MYSELF, after throwing a chair into a wall and having an epiphany.

First, you have to open EA and go to browse and look for the Sims 3, then you are going to try and launch the Sims 3, but when the menu for those codes comes up, don't go any further.

Leave that be and make sure you have the Sims 3 pulled up in EA, and I am not sure what happened, but I was able to put the codes into the EA engine, and it took them and uploaded my game, so hopefully that helps. I hope you find some peace and sanity, because I understand, friend if you need any more questions.

In your Steam library, right-click on the game. Select "Manage", then select "Browse Local Files", then open the file titled "Game". Now open the "bin" file. TS3W.exe is in there.

Using the .exe file from the game folder does not require Steam to be open. It does not use any launchers from Steam or EA to open the game, Keep in mind that Steam will not be keeping track of how many hours you've logged on the game when you are using the .exe file. You will be playing the game in your own private sessions.

Although you are using your Steam library to locate the file, you could just as easily create a link on your desktop for the location of the file and launch the game from there without ever opening Steam.

You know u could just use a virtueal meachine + windows 7 in it to play without problame as long as u have rams and graphic things , far less hastle and the game runs fine on windows 7 .

It won't let me override, I still get error.

As for VM, NGL, I also build games on my decice- it's already crammed with game engines and other stuff- to say nothing that I am looking to install 1 or 2 Vms for other things on top of it all. I highly doubt I will have enough room for VM #3...

Which processor are you using? If you are using a 12gen intel processor, the game not starting is a known issue.

I highly recommend following the guide I have linked below, a fix for the issue above as well as many others are included and you shouldn't have any issues trying to get it to run after following it.
