You need to have an HDR capable display. 1440p and 144Hz doesn't mean HDR. HDR displays are relatively new to the market.

You also need to activate HDR in wondows. Why is this? I don't have this problem with BF1, for instance.

I have the locked off setting, Me I have the Windows 10 1803, everything work perfectly in all other HDR game, so I suspect there are bad algo to make the verification of windows version build in this game. How know that? because I found a workaround to make activate On the HDR display, with config text file

before to change this setting you need have
1- HDR monitor or TV (me I have Acer x27)
2- Windows greater or equal than 1703 (me I have version 1803) for question of support the I am not sure, educating guess, game developer probalby check for this exact version so 1703, not greater than...
3- Windows 10 HDR option activate in display it's call "HDR and WCG" in 1803,
so setting->system->display

if 1-3 are not respect the setting will comeback to off before you can reach setting in game (I test it before with disable windows 10 hdr setting)

Edit
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty WWII\players2\user_config.cfg search for r_allowHDR
You should found this
seta r_allowHDR "0"
You want that
seta r_allowHDR "1"
save the file

Those files are on your Steam cloud, so popup from steam will warn you that local file are more recent than cloud choose local
If your game react like me, you see HDR Ouput option to On, in graphic advanced, don't change back to Off, because it will be locked again

In basic graphics menu you should see 2 more option HDR white point settings and black point settings.

Enjoy, I hope it help!!!

I'm late to the party, thanks for the tip to make it work. Why does this game need Win10 to have it enabled when all the DICE games work fine? When I enable it on Win10, the desktop is washed out and pale so I have to flick it on for CoD then off again when I'm done.
HDR monitor needed and a HDMI cable of 2.0B running through it

or DP port in your Case that can handle HDR

Actual HDR output isn't actually compatible with Windows 7 or 8.x, no matter what. It has never been, and it will never be. This was first supported by Windows beginning with the first 2017 release, version 1703 (the "Creators Update") of Windows 10.

The stuff of getting pale is normal. This is because the desktop itself is still rendered in SDR.
Sorry, I worded that badly. I totally get the Windows 10 as a requirement, I've been using it since launch and always kept up to date. I just mean why does it need to have HDR option enabled for Win10 itself when Battlefield 1, V and Battlefront 2 can enable HDR independent of that unlike CoD WWII. Just seems like a silly limitation?
